Just after getting the starter over hauled , magnets had came off . Fitted the starter and pressed button , starter just spins ,it's not engaging properly or what ever it does . What can I do ?? Does it need to go black or is something sticking and not releasing ?? Mot on Monday and if it needs fixing I need it back from shop ASAP . Will try in morning but any help would be great . Thankyou in advance .

You need to pull the cover off and have a look to see if what's happeneing when the button is pressed, or remove it and try it on the bench with a battery.

You could also ask the repairman what happend when he tested it.

The solenoid in the starter should push the cog/pinion into mesh on the flywheel teeth before it makes a contact and turns the starter motor. It would be unusual for this not to happen so if its just turning I would suspect the starter clutch, not sure if it is a sprag clutch but sounds like its not engaging. The only other thing I can think is that the shaft has snapped,

What does this wrong body mean?

I'm guessing that it has something to do with the polarity of the magnets.

Correct, if you reverse the connections i.e brushes it will work ok, another useless piece of information but I don't get out much!.

i thought there was something about flashing the field coil leads to get a motor to run the other way?

maybe i'm imagining it

That takes me back...... reminds me of the old days of positive earth cars and having to flip the polarity of any electrical items before fitting :D

Magnets glued back upside down. I once fitted the motor can from a Peugeot car. It went backwards without engaging.

Took it back to fitter and found it going anti clockwise , so he changed body and fitted it in 10 mins and what a massive difference , it also helped the ABS fault I was having . I great big Thankyou to DrFarkoff who helped me big time . Owe him a few drinks next time we meet up .

It does not have any field coils that's what the magnets are for.
