Ok here goes. This is alot to read so a quick summary if you can't be bothered with the details.
In Summary - R1150GS Adventure
The bike starts easy enough but the starter motor(I think) lets out a constant loud groan/whine. If you think you may have a clue what is causing this please read on. I am fearful I may need a new starter motor. Hopefully someone can advise me otherwise.
1) Since I purchased my R1150GS Adventure the fast idle has never worked properly. Only time the revs picked up was when I held the lever full up. Got some advice on this thread http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=230074 and as well as adjsting the cable at the handlebar thought I would have a butchers at the cable distribution unit and see if it looked ok there. It's located underneath the ABS unit so I abandoned that idea.
2) Fast idle/choke now works ok but not great following adjustment(it's now right at the end of it's available adjustment at the handlebar).
3) I will be balancing the throttles once my vacuum gauge arrives.
4) The second irritating thing I've had since I bought the bike is that, particularly when cold, there was a screech following starting up the bike. I presumed I was holding the start button down too long.
5) Today following the adjustment of the choke/fast idle I started the bike no problem with its usual screech. I let it run for a little while and then shut it down. Upon trying to start it immediately afterwards it was difficult to start and the starter motor (I presume it is the starter motor) lets out a constant loud whine/groan as it turns the engine over.
6) It's done this before previously about two weeks ago on a cold morning. The engine, not surprsingly, dies when cold and the throttle is blipped with no choke. Attempting to start it afterwards it exhibited the same symptons. This was before the choke/fast idle was adjusted. Only on this occasion it went away after I had ridden it a while.
7) This time the whine /groan is not going away.
8) Just got home and checked the bike over. Only thing I can see from a rudimentary glance as the night draws in is the vacuum take off point caps are badly cracked and would appear well capable of letting in air. Don't know how important this is as the bike starts easy enough.
My plan going forward is to balance the throttles, replace the vacuum caps and whip the starter motor out and get a look at it. I'm pretty inexperienced at fault finding so a nudge in the right direction would be appreciated.
