Having the usual winter problems with starting so decided to strip down the starter motor and found that the grease plate / shim had jammed and holes had been burnt through as in Mike O's post.

The rest of the starter motor is fine, some light grease etc between the magnets which I've cleaned out, connections all fine and without the plate - temporary fix - the bike starts. It makes a very different noise on start up which is concerning -

Question is - can you just buy a replacement shim / plate? whats its real name as a host of google searches comes up with nothing. OEM does not go down as far as this component on the starter motor and all I can get is a replacement or refurb.

If this has happened is there more of a problem somewhere else in the starter motor or is repeated failed starts just putting more and more strain on this component causing the short.

Should i just get a new starter - its a r1150gs, 2004 with 62,000 on the clock.

Cheers!

When this happened to me, I bent the locking tabs out a bit and forced it back into position. So far it has remained. Mine has a few holes burnt in it but I figured a few holes was better than no plate at all. At least most of the grease will remain inside the planetary gears. I don't know where you could get a replacement cover from.

If you do need other parts. Try these people http://www.autospark.eu/ they are cheap, have most of the parts for the valeo staters, and there delivery is quick.

+1 for what Ian did, I also put a little liquid metal on told mine in place

may see you in a few weeks as I will be in Horsham on my 1150 for a few days

Cheers!! its now straight and will be going back on. New starter on the 'big service' list. Everything seems to be needing more TLC now, wires need re-soldering, rust appearing daily. Wish i had a back up bike so I could take the GS off line and really sort it out 100%

Roadcaptain, if I'm home the kettle is always on for passing GSers! especially 1150's
