A quick and barbaric test of your starter and battery is to short the big {13mm) live starter terminal to the solenoid (small spade) terminal on your starter motor using an old screwdriver, there may be a spark and the starter should crank, if it does then its multimeter time to find the fault. or ride around carrying an old screwdriver.

With the starter off and bench tested (buy me and local starter/alternator shop, as above but jump leads direct) it worked no probs everytime, but on the bike it would work 1 in 10 so I stripped it and found the magnets loose.
Direct 12volts with no resistance on the starter no probs, loosing some volts and resistance of 2 dustbin pistons worth of compression, problems..
