I recently had the starter motor refurbished, but now the bendix gear on the shaft is chewed up, has anyone an healthy gear from an otherwise knackered unit ?
or has anyone had experience of these people who are advertising new replacement starter motors for £65.

I don't know, nor have ever seen any starter motors from the link you supplied.

Buy what i do know is the cheaper starter motors available on ebay have much thinner cases, that's the ali part that the two mounting bolts go through and attach the starter to the engine block.
And i've seen a few with the cases broken.

So, not a scientific study, just what i've personally had experience of.

just did a general search and found this - http://www.motoelectrical.co.uk/typ...100-r1150-r1200-d6ra75-starter-motor-spr0008/

My starter turns the engine SLOW but it always starts, I'm going to take it apart and give it a good clean out but was just wondering if there are any replacements (without silly money involved) that are geared for a faster turn over or is that not possible?

Sorry for the hijack bobsnew

Try Euromotoelectrics.com in the USA

They had all the bits when I needed to do my 1150GS starter motor

It's not usually cost effective to import items to the UK from the US (I've tried it before with music gear) due to the shipping cost, VAT on shipping and purchase and the £10 tax collection fee from ParcelForce.

I'd just go for

Probably not as good as the original, but at fifty quid delivered they can be regarded as a semi-consumable. I had one on my old R850GS for 40,000 miles and it was fine.

Thank you all for your replies, I have noted your recommendations for the future, I have just had a chat with the Moto Electrical people in Norfolk who were most helpful and knowledgeable, i have ordered a new unit from them with 12 months warranty, £63.20 inc next day DPD delivery.

Let us know how it performs :thumb

Cheap usually means shete too. From what I've heard they've all turned into cheap China production crap, Valeo included. They don't build them high-quality like they did in the 90s. I have stock Valeo (Made in France) on my '98 1100 and after 300 000 klicks it still runs like new, I know my mate keeps buying new Valeos very often for his newer 1150 with motor, bendix or bearing shells crapping out.

Albeit also declined in quality (not made in Japan anymore) Denso seems to be the best of the bunch if you can source one, they seem to be rare lately. More expensive, mind.

Damage done

This is the bendix gear and starter ring showing the damage done, I have bought the new starter motor as i have been unable to source the gear alone.
I am awaiting delivery of a new starter ring, this us part of the clutch carrier, so a new clutch as well, so quite an expense.

Make sure the stater motor locating pin is in place otherwise you'll be having the same problem. :thumb2

Now you have been thinking:confused: Well the new one has arrived as promised and looks a lot healthier.
