starter motor solenoid

Anyone know how difficult it is to replace the solenoid on the starter?

My appears to have sprung a leak as when I tried to start the bike yesterday all the smoke inside the solenoid leaked out!!!

I was forced to ride through deep water that covered the starter on Saturday, parked the bike up and on Sunday morning battery was completly dead (short ?), tried a jump and there was sparky heat and stuff, so got recovery.
So charged battery, disconnected all accessories, put battery on and checked for discharge (none) so no apparent short, all lights etc fine, hit starter and as said all the smoke inside leaked out.

I have an old starter with the knackered magnets but unsure if the solenoid is replaceable or its better to replace the complete housing its mounted to?

anyone else done the same job?

Were you at the wet BBB rally, I have seen Spills photos.

Man of your skills should be able to swap solenoids over.

Yes I was at the BBB GPO, and I am sure I can, I just dont want to go at it like a bull at a gate, if someone tells me there are springs and things etc or somthing else I need to be aware of first, as I cant find any exploded diagrams to show what exactly is inside.

Bowser, it has been a while since I was playing with the insides of a starter motor, but I think the solenoid is easy to remove, take the front of the motor apart and the solenoid throw arm is connected to the bendix, and is easy to separate, I dont recall any springs disappearing across the garage.

Never stripped one off a GS before - but is there not usually a return spring around the solenoid stem?

There is, but it is big enough to see and not under great tension, so wont disapear into the darkest corner of the garage.

we have it at work its called the armoury crawl, normally happens when the little tiny spring behined the ball detent disappears as you take it appart!!!!!

Thats a great link, thanks, however I had seen it and while it is great at showing how to take the starter motor appart, it DONT show anything about the solenoid, it dont even show removing it from the casing, and since what I was after is exploded diagrams of the inside of that or a report showing how to take that appart I repeat "I will be buggered if I can find one"

Citroen has the same starter but it rotates the wrong way
So it doesn't fit to our BMWs
Valeo solenoid fits.
