starter motor sticking

hello all , bit of info needed if poss , just got back from tour around Scotland for a week and a bit , thought i would pop across to Holy island , ( not managed to cross causway ) , stopped bike to check tide times , (gs 1100 ) , back on the bike ,side stand up , pressed starter ,, click click click , nowt , call out recovery , chap came , checked batt all ok , started light taps to the starter motor with bar , with me pressing button , hey presto all fired up , , the bike had a new clutch fitted two weeks ago and is running great now ,love it to bits , any adivise as to this new problem , can the starter be repaired or is it just as cheep to replace , many thanks Buzzy
 
Jammed starter

Had exactly what your problem appears to be, and it was the magnets on the armature that come "Unglued", and jam the motor.
Might just be that the starter "cog" and shaft need a clean up, but more likely th above, sadly.
New starters are around £160 from usual suspects -MotoBins, Sherlocks etc, or it is possible to get them re-conditioned.
If you are able to get to Thetford (when you get back from trip), there is a company there that can re-con for around £60-ish, depending.
Otherwise, Valeo starters are common to some Fiats, Citroens, and Peugeot cars apparently.
Some GSers have taken starter apart and re-attached (glued) the magnets back in place, but not done this myself- no doubt someone will post their methods for doing this.
Hope you get it fixed, but at least it is easy to remove from bike !!!

Before you panic and run off and buy a new starter motor I suggest you take a look at the one you have. Mine made some horrible noises for a while - it never stuck completely but investigation showed it had a fair amount of accumulated crub built up in there. Take it out ( easy job just a couple of bolts) and give it a damn good clean. I used brake cleaner spray on mine and then regrease it well . Since them it's been fine.
 
Hopefully,all you will have to do is remove the starter and clean all the grease,clutch dust and any other crud off the starter shaft as it's probably sticking.
Use a brush with parafin or any other solvent and make sure the bendix gear slides easily on the shaft.
Light spray of WD40 or GT85 afterwards on the mechanism (wipe off excess) and reassemble.
The starters can fall apart inside if you're unlucky.

Bendix gear -that's the technical name I was looking for :blast -hope that's all it is !!!!
 
All I have ever read on starter motors has stated the bendix gear should be clean, dry and unlubricated.

But doesn’t the started motor on these machines have a throw in solenoid rather than a bendix, I’m at work, so can’t get at anything technical
 
Clunk

Mine has recently developed an intermittent fault on the startup, the solenoid sounds to pull in reasonably positively but fails to turn the starter motor, second or third attempts currently do the trick, is this a starter problem or a solenoid problem. Doubt it is the battery as I fitted an Oddysy only a month ago as insurance for a trip to France.
 
remove it, drill out the little rivets on the casing (you dont have to re-rivet on rebuild so dont worry) and take it all in bits, clean it up etc. It really is a doddle. :thumb
