Does anyone know how to get at this and remove it? I need to test it cos I cant find anything else wrong except the motor just turns slowly and eventually gives up. The battery drops to 9V when motor engaged. The batts new and the alternator and regs are ok..ie the battery's getting charged. It holds around 13.6v wid the motor running and main beam and heated grips on at tickover. Tried starting wid clutch engaged..same same.
Cheers.

If you`re asking that kind of question, either take the bike to someone who knows what they`re doing,or buy a workshop manual and read it before any expensive or painful damage is incurred to you or the bike.

Come on mate, the very reason to have a forum like this is to help ppl do some DIY (although a manual helps)

Anyway, it's an easy job. Undo the wiring and the two bolts then withdraw the starter motor

I think it would be wise to disconnect the battery first ;)

Had a similar problem on an old goldwing it was the thrust bearing (or lack of)in the starter.I packed it out with an old brass washer and some grease, it was fine for years after. Check for end float in the shaft when you get the starter out, should not be any, when the starter engages it throws the shaft back so could be binding . good luck :D

Valeo starters have been known to have one of the four magnets come loose inside the casing. Starter will sometime turn very slowly, or just stop. Usually accompanied with a scraping sound.

Thanks, sounds like mine. BTW already disconnected the battery.
Not used to working on BM's at all I just wondered where it was and how accessable it was. Anyway gonna have it out tonight, work permitting.

Put it on test rig and armature shorting out, sparks shooting out the back.
So new one required. Motorworks quoted £157 plus delivery, anyone know any where else?

Try local auto electrician for a repair first. ;) You might be very pleased and suprised, could save £100 at that price. :thumb

Have a look at www.siebenrock.de or www.hobbyist.nl they both do recon and new parts for a wide range of boxers. Prices are usually pretty good as long as you're not paranoid about buying from a non-Uk supplier. Both these companies are good.

Thanks, found this company in Irl that do bits. They sell a new magnet housing which fixes the loose magnet problem, costs 60 euros.
Unfortunately the armature short really has shagged the motor. (It was tested by auto elecs I know)
