Hi
I had a low mileage, second hand starter motor fitted to my 1200 TC 40K miles ago.
Bike wouldn’t start today, just a loud click - no warning, such as previously sluggish to start.
The click doesn’t seem to be coming from the starter motor more like under the tank so I’m hoping it’s the relay.
Are there any tests I can do to establish if it’s the relay?
Could it be something else?
The bikes done 90K
Thanks

New battery last month, checked with jump leads but no difference sadly

Try jumping with an old screwdriver from the spade terminal ( pull the connector off) with the thin wire. jump to the battery cable coming into the starter Thick cable.
I have known it for the cable that runs from the starter relay ( this is located under the petrol tank and is next to the spotlight relay both are interchangeable and can be swapped to test) The cable has been known to break and the easiest repair is to piggy back the cable.

Sorry to say, you bough a sh unit,

Just buy a reman unit i think mine was £150

When my old Hexhead starter got sluggish I stripped it down and washed it through with contact cleaner, regreased the planetary gears and reassembled it and all was good again. It’s a pretty basic unit to work on.

I had bought a spare brush pack for it just in case, but part-exed the bike before it was needed.

Yesterday I had to repair the feed wire to the relay on my 2010TC 112k due to the cable/connector corroding through at the relay end, it was hanging on by 2 strands of wire. Motorrad only quote a repair set, plug and wires to splice in @£40 ish but the car lads can buy the connector separately @ £1.62, still not cheap but a lot better. There is plenty of wire spare to remake the connection, Part no. is 61138377732. (It doesn't come up at Motorworks) You can order from either the car or bike dealers, I used Motorrad and it was in my hand in 2 days. Car dealers may have them in stock?
The relay is also used on various bm bikes and cars with the following part no. 61366902041, £11.88 @ Motorworks, I didn't need one so never asked the price at Motorrad.
Hopefully you haven't got a full tank cos it will be heavy!!!
Hope you soon get sorted :thumby:

Thanks for all the advice, tank is full unfortunately

The part number you quote above is for the female terminal which goes in to the plug? I have what is likely the same issue, and also a full GSA tank!

Yes it is. Note that there are 2 locking tangs that you need to depress to get it out, one either side. A third hand with thin nose pliers would be helpful as there is very little to grip! I would try to get some of the fuel out of that tank before you give yourself a hernia or drop it...

Yeah, I will jump the terminals and continue using the bike till the tank a bit lighter. Just ordered 4 of them at £1.50 each 👍. Is there plenty enough slack in the loom to give easy enough access with a crimping tool?

If you are getting a click from the relay under the tank when you press the button, then the fault is down-stream from the relay which is functioning. Check you have voltage at the starter contacts when you try to start. Also check you have a good earth from the starter.

Yes plenty of slack in the loom. The sliding locks for the ecu plugs can be a sod to undo if they have several years worth of muck in them. As dashfixer said, if the relay is clicking it's probably ok.

Thanks for the confirmation, it's been a while since I had the tank off.

If the relay is clicking it just means the primary coil inside it is operating..... Its no guarantee that the actual high-current contacts within the relay aren't heavily pitted or burnt out.

It might just need a replacement relay.

Any good??

quite satisfying to dissemble , clean and check, assemble again…provided it’s working then!
