Right after my previous starter thread I thought I would show you what Ive done.
Unfortunately , being computer illiterate I cant show a stp by step rebuild of the starter but the pics should show whats involved.
First dismantled mine and found the magnets had become detatched.
Got a starter, D6RA from a scrappy, Pretty grubby but it worked.
Dismantled same. three bolds plus one smaller one and the front (Alloy bit) comes off. This can be discarded as it is different from the BMW one.
The pin will drop out of the solenoid actuating arm . Two small screws hold the solenoid onto a metal ring that fits between the motor and the alloy front piece.
when the screws are removed the solenoid can be removed. the plunger with its spring comes out from the front and the solenoid body from the back
Two small pop rivets hold the ring onto the starter moter and can be drilled out. there is no need to replace them.
Once the motor is detatched the state of the magnets can be seen. mine was pretty grubby but it looks as if the magnets had been re glued at some time as the glue/resin can clearly be seen whereas on the original there seems to be the slightest smear of adhesive.
The rear cover of the motor is removed by undoing the two small nuts and prising the cover off then the rubber seal. The brushes can then be inspected. Mine were ok.
The whole lot was cleaned with engine degreaser including the original starter dog and planet gears. greased and the whole lot laid out on clean paper to get in mi mind where it all went again. Then it was reassembled and tested. all seemed to work fine . The solenoid can be rotated to suit the electrical connections on the bike.
The starter cost me a fiver as it was in their scrap bin. The solenoid didnt work but that was just dirty. so a cheap job. tools were a couple of spanners an allen key and a torex screw driver. Thats yer lot. Could do it on the side of the road or outside the scrap dealer. New one cheapest I could get was £150 plus vat.m
I also ought to add that I am not mechanically trained though I have messed about with cars and bikes for donkey's years.
hope this helps any other starter worriers.

Great post, and wish I'd seen this when my 1150 starter magnets went. So, as and when my GS PD one goes, I know who to call for help !!
Maybe the "extra" glue on your scrapyard starter means it is a more recent Valeo; I think that they have tried to resolve what was becoming an all too common problem. Let's face it, it shouldn't happen at all, and it can't be that difficult for the manufacturer to sort this out at source. Maybe they are/were manufactured in China, and early ones a result of poor Quality Control ?

Pictures much appreciated anyhow -hope it all works OK on the bike !

Great write up Tony :thumb2
It may be of help to know that the Valeo DR6A starter motor was originally fitted to Citroen Saxo 1.1 and the Peugeot 106 equivalent..
Loads in Scrappys and I'm asking my tame one to collect all of them he can :thumb2

Heres a further post on the subject :)

It is well possible to repair such a defective starter (there are several descriptions about this on the web; see the link list at the end of this section), but it is probably more efficient to re-use a complete starter motor from a car junkyard. Valeo starters of the type we need were used in a number of smaller cars, such as Opel Corsa, Astra, Kadett; Renault Clio; Citroën AX, BX and C15; Peugeot 205, 206, 306, 307, 309, 405, etc. Those who live in the USA may want to look for Saturn cars. Do not worry too much about the shape of the cast aluminium cone; the important point is that you ask for a Valeo DR6RA or DR6A. (It seems that the starter of the Renault Laguna is even a true 1:1 replacement for the complete BMW part?)

Steady on Proff, you'll corner the market !!!! Leave some for us...
or are you going to re-con them, and sell on the site ?:thumb Just a suggestion !

LOL:D
Nahh only the ones in the Okehampton area....
I might recon them tho'
OR even better let you all have them at same price as I get them for being as said scrappy owes me a multitude of favours :)

Thanks for the responses, I was going to keep the original and refix the magnets even tapping and bolting them in but I recon its far easier and probably just as cheap to just replace the motor as above. Getting lazy I guess

Just a word of warning. I picked up a saxo startermotor the other day, it spins in the wrong direction. No problem I thought, just swap the bendix over with the one from my old motor. Not so easy, the teeth on my old planet gears are a different size to the teeth on the new armature. And because the old armature is knackered I cant use that.:(

could you not just swop the motor connecting wires around that should make the motor armature spin in the other direction ?

:thumb2:thumb2:thumb2Yup that'll do it :)
but I think you will need to use your original bendix drive :)
to throw out the cog

the bendix does seem to vary, see the pic above showing the original and the one off the doner, they are different lengths. I reused my old one. I also believe some have more or less teeth, cant remember now whether mine hqad 9 or 11. So I would only go for a starter with the same number of teeth on the bendix then the armature should still fit the original bendix planet gears. I think
