Right after my previous starter thread I thought I would show you what Ive done.
Unfortunately , being computer illiterate I cant show a stp by step rebuild of the starter but the pics should show whats involved.
First dismantled mine and found the magnets had become detatched.
Got a starter, D6RA from a scrappy, Pretty grubby but it worked.
Dismantled same. three bolds plus one smaller one and the front (Alloy bit) comes off. This can be discarded as it is different from the BMW one.
The pin will drop out of the solenoid actuating arm . Two small screws hold the solenoid onto a metal ring that fits between the motor and the alloy front piece.
when the screws are removed the solenoid can be removed. the plunger with its spring comes out from the front and the solenoid body from the back
Two small pop rivets hold the ring onto the starter moter and can be drilled out. there is no need to replace them.
Once the motor is detatched the state of the magnets can be seen. mine was pretty grubby but it looks as if the magnets had been re glued at some time as the glue/resin can clearly be seen whereas on the original there seems to be the slightest smear of adhesive.
The rear cover of the motor is removed by undoing the two small nuts and prising the cover off then the rubber seal. The brushes can then be inspected. Mine were ok.
The whole lot was cleaned with engine degreaser including the original starter dog and planet gears. greased and the whole lot laid out on clean paper to get in mi mind where it all went again. Then it was reassembled and tested. all seemed to work fine . The solenoid can be rotated to suit the electrical connections on the bike.
The starter cost me a fiver as it was in their scrap bin. The solenoid didnt work but that was just dirty. so a cheap job. tools were a couple of spanners an allen key and a torex screw driver. Thats yer lot. Could do it on the side of the road or outside the scrap dealer. New one cheapest I could get was £150 plus vat.m
I also ought to add that I am not mechanically trained though I have messed about with cars and bikes for donkey's years.
hope this helps any other starter worriers.
