these bike's point blank refuse to crank if it doesn't like the look of the battery - my KMT 1290 was the same
fit a good battery and both crank fine - don't believe the stories about slow crank - it either makes an effort at normal speed or just never bothers....

Any particular make or model you'd recommend for the GS?

Pretty sure thats what we put in my 06 & 11
dont go 10/40 in hot temps or it it will clatter like diesel
that castrol is good - but too hard to come across and even harder to find at a sensible cost
I'm running a posh brand 15/50 fully synthetic to MA2 spec - but you could run a car oil as the box and clutch is separate
JASO MA2 is the spec you must have for bikes with a wet clutch and integral gearbox - as it has the correct additives to cope with gears chewing on oil for fun and to help the wet clutch behave nicely

Buy a bulk drum of 20W50 semi-synthetic JASO MA2 spec oil from Westway Lubricants for about £80 and do your own oil changes, it works out at about £18 a change. Throw in a MANN or MAHLE oil filter for about a tenner and you are still quids in.
(And buy a new battery with the money you save.)

Thanks for the oil suggestions, but I was replying to Botus and asking what battery he'd recommend.
He wouldn't, he dislikes the marque with a passion
Only 3 i would recommend
Oddysey - expensive
Motobatt - generally as good as the oddysey but cheaper
Noco - light weight lots of oomph, but may not be everyones cup of tea
Pretty much as above. 16 years of my GSA ownership. Odyssey lasted 12 years. Motobatt now for 4 years. I only took the oddysey out because it was 12 years old. It hadn't failed and still holds a charge now. Motobatt in 2 of my TL's and also in my xl500r too.

Well, Motorworks have agreed to take the battery back on a warranty claim, provided me with a free DPD returns label and its on its way.
I have asked for a replacement battery, so let's see what happens next.

UPDATE:
Motorworks have stepped up and supplied me with a brand new Motobatt MBYZ16HD.
I just checked the date code and the battery was manufacturer in July this year, it also arrived with 12.75v in it.
The bike is still in bits as I am renewing other bits and bobs, so a test start will need to wait for a couple of days, but I am well happy with Motorworks.
