Starting issues

This has been discussed a number of times on UKGSER, either do a search yourself or go direct to here: https://www.ukgser.com/forums/showt...blem-r1250gs?p=5607689&viewfull=1#post5607689

In a nutshell, it’s more of a decompressor issue than a battery issue.
The last time it happened on mine I put it in 3rd gear and pushed the bike a couple of times to nudge the engine over compression and it started immediately.

Mine was defo a battery issue ! Should you really have to do that with a modern bike ?

I would also check you don’t have a “loose” connection with the kill switch. Just to cover the bases.

I think the solution is quite simple, and it has already been suggested. The description by OP points in the direction of a shot battery. Pure and simple.

No reason to procrastinate. Change the battery...

Even if the bike is not very old. One sloppy winter storage might be enough to damage the battery.
Happens all the time...

The bike has already had a new battery in December. It has never been allowed to discharge. It started on the button when I rode on Saturday. I rode for 45mins before stopping. Stopped momentarily to put a postcode in the satnav with bike and power off. Came to restart and nada till an hour or so later and then restarts. Cant tell what the battery is currently as its in with the dealers who are trying to tell me its the draw from all the aftermarket equipment. I have lights and an ezcan and a horn. They are now saying that in order to investigate further they are going to have to charge me. Not happy!

Weird that I was only just reading this stream last night. I have had battery issues but thought that my solar Optimate (I have no power to my detached (by 2 miles) garage) was going to rectify them. I have since discovered that I needed the Op4 that can access the cambus through the Din socket so the lead I purchased, thinking I was all that, is actually useless. Anyhow, the bike had only been in the fairly warm Blood Bike Unit for 3.5 days and then today, as I prepared for an extended route to the shops then home, as per the 2,000 mile Coastline Challenge utube clip above, it told me to jog on until the 7th or 8th attempt when it struggled back to life. I contacted Ocean BMW Plymouth in a somewhat emotional state and they took the under the weather Beast in straight away. There was a figure of £160 for a new BMW battery muted before I handed my keys over, for which I was obviously ready to battle over. A short time later, Bill comes to find and says that it's all sorted. He explained that it was a duff battery. I asked how much? He said, "Nothing." HAPPY DAYS. Thanks Ocean Plymouth

Thanks very much for this link! Makes a mockery of my dealer's response. I have screen grabbed a load of the posts and will be emailing them to the sales manager (who actually seems pretty reasonable) along with a demand for my money back on the battery I bought in December and an option to fully repair the bike as per the descriptions in here or I will take it to another dealer and post the name of the dealer all over this forum!

Thanks again

bmw fitted factory battery ? comes with no warranty . you are having a laugh

get the dealer to check the charging system , check the battery on another bike .

new battery failing ......not fit for purpose.

i'm an indie mechanic , i give 6 months warranty on batteries. ( ok my supplier does )

there is another problem there hiding , OR they sold you a duff battery.

Interesting - can I ask which battery type you bought?

I've always had a pretty high regard for Yuasa batteries, so whilst there is the YTX14-BS as a replacement for my 1250, I see also there is high performance version (YTX14H-BS) - is that worth fitting instead? And as mentioned before MotoBatt seems to get good reviews (although I've never actually used one, but happy if regarded as good).

Anyone any recommendations? YTX14-BS? YTX14H-BS? Motobatt (if so which)? Odyssey I've never come across, so happy for any recommendations

but can be fitted to the LC versions -
https://www.nippynormans.com/servic...-to-2016-r1200r-lc-to-2016-r1200rs-lc-to-2016

there is an online pdf on how to mod it for later LC models

Can you post a link to the instructions for a PC535 in a 1250LC please?

Indeed -

https://www.motorworks.co.uk/vlive/TheShed/PDF/ELA00535C.pdf

its only pictures i'm afraid and it takes ages to load

They also give this bit of info -

Specifically modified to fit the LC models built before 01/08/2016. The battery cage was altered on this date, this battery will fit the battery cage - 61218533308

I seem to remember that you could remove / mod the upper part of the battery tray on later bikes ( mines an 04 16), so i know i can get away with it .

Thanks very much Santa. Yep, looks like the Odyssey fitted into a 1200LC. I'll keep an eye out for any pics as fitted into a newer 1250.

new bike solution?

So.... opinions please. Due to my protestations to the dealer they have elected to offer me a choice of a couple of replacement bikes. My bike is a Rallye TE 2019 with 7k on it. The dealer is offering me a 2020 (69) bike with exactly the same spec and only 700 miles on it and to swap over all my farkles from my bike plus a payment of £1250 from me orrrrr..... a triple black, brand new with all the usual TE spec goodies plus heated seats, the point where you are heading head light and Africa twin style running lights in the front indicators and black spoked wheels, BMW fog lights and the billet alu mirrors, again swapping over all my farkles from old bike to new for an additional £4750.

£4750 is a big chunk of money but that does buy me the latest model spec, a warm bum and a light that will no doubt cost loads to put right when it inevitably goes wrong at some hopefully distant point in the future along with a longer warranty. The Rallye has 28 months warranty. The 3x Black isn't registered yet so it can be held off to be put onto the March plate.

My bike has a service plan which effectively will give me two more services, one of which is due in March...

Any opinions welcome.....

Triple black every time

stunning motorcycle

Get them to fix it (fit a decent battery), keep the current bike and blow the £1250 on farkles or just save it. You would basically be getting a 6 ish month newer bike and a mileage difference which is largely irrelevant for a touring bike and it’s costing you money you don’t need to spend. The spec difference unless you go for the new model is mostly cosmetic. £5k to have a warm bum and a twiddly headlight is a big price to pay when essentially you have a nearly new bike already which is under warranty still.

I'd agree with spoonz. If you are that bothered about a heated seat (I really don't miss the one I had on my previous Tiger 1200), then you can always buy one for a lot less from Touratech and fit it to your current machine. Unless you want a brand new machine and can afford the extra £4,750 for a Triple Black, you still have a relatively new machine with low mileage. Whilst I appreciate that they have made an offer to replace yours - which is good - can they really not fix your current machine?

Difficult choice which realistically only you can make. You know how happy or not you are with your current machine, If you do decide to change though, I think I'd go for the 2020 (69) bike, as, as you say you are happy with yours, so like for like, but mileage aside, its only a few months newer and £1250 is a big price difference for a few months difference. But if you want new, then only you can decide whether you regard the trade-in value of yours plus £4,750 is a good deal or not.

Do you still trust the bike?

I’m quite tolerant of faults on vehicles just not ones that leave me stranded repeatedly unable to get where I want to be or to get home.

If I even had a tiny niggle at the back of my mind when taking the bike out then I would change the bike as I just don’t trust it anymore.

That is exactly where I'm at. Its not helped by the fact that the dealer still refuses to blame anything other than me not having it on an optimate when not riding. Hardly an 'adventure' bike is it? He's willing to give me an optimate and a refund for the battery I already purchased. Im tempted to take everything off the bike and keep it on the optimate until the next time it happens and then say...now what! Equally I'm hoping the dealer will come up with something 'better price wise off of the other replacement possibilities. Ive pushed them as far as I can in regard to mine but the new is still too much of a chunk to my mind and the low mileage one doesn't give me enough. Its not that much newer. The mileage isn't that much less. And its still more money and doesn't have the service plan. Which granted is only really another two services if this lock down continues, one of which is due in a couple of weeks, but its still another £200 odd that I will need to find at some point.

Is the 1250 that much different? in the battery tray area, have a look on real oem, and see if it will fit

I don’t think the dealer is doing you many favours with the offer on the new bike. The other second hand bike is maybe more interesting.

I will say that I think I have put an odyssey battery in every BMW I have owned, apart from my LC bikes, as they were always very weak on restart when the engine was hot once they got to about a year old. The odyssey batteries always cranked way stronger.

If I haven’t had a decent spin on the bike in about two weeks I will plug it into my CTEK charger to top it up. The charger will usually show the battery is starting to get low at the two week marker (bike does have an alarm and lives in a very cold garage).

Tough call.
Get a newer bike but be down a chunk of change
Or keep the battery topped up but maybe have that niggle at the back of your mind.
