I had the tank off my 2003 1150ADV a week ago and as and when I put it back I did all the good things like cleaning the electrical connector and checking the sleeve on the throttle cable. I then started it and let it run for fifteen seconds with no problems.
Next morning I loaded it up for the commute to work, started it again and it ran for two seconds and died. Wouldn't start, ran the battery down trying. Guess was that no fuel was getting to the cylinders from the sound as it tried to start.
Couldn't look at it straight away and then life was too busy until today. Charged it up yesterday then tried to start it again. No joy, and a nasty suspicion that the fuel pump wasn't starting up.
Took the tank off again in case I'd managed to kink a hose or block a breather tube. Checked all the electrical connections and put it back again, with the same checks as before. Only different this time was that after cursing the QD links because they didn't want to go back I looked carefully at the electrical connection. I got a horrible feeling I'd twisted it last time and connected it the wrong way round, which I didn't think was possible. I checked the wire colours and connections very carefully as I put it together this time. When I pressed the button it started.
So there you go, another possible reason why your bike won't start, or won't run smoothly.
Being an idiot.
