My yr 2000 R1100GS has developed a starting problem since being unriden for a few weeks. The motor now turns really but slowly and although she always seems to start, it doesn't fill me with confidence. I assume a rewind of the starter motor will sort it out but wondered if anyone is familiar with this issue?
Thanks

Most likely your battery is either needing a good charge, or is needing replaced. If the battery is 100% known to be good then a refurb of the starter motor is next. They can get gummed up with crap, the brushes can wear (replacements are cheap enough), the magnets can come unstuck from the casing, or the grease plate can short out and burn through. Theres plenty 'how to's' online, its an easy enough job.

Rule out the battery though ;)

Does your clock reset to 0:00 sometimes when you start from cold? Sure sign the battery isn't up to the task.

Now hold on there - if the bike hasn't been ridden for weeks, even if it's been plugged into a battery tender / intelligent charger, the volts can still be down, affecting starter performance.
Just charge the battery fully and then see if any more attention is needed.

And I'm a fan of the amazing Shorai Li-On battery that doesn't self-discharge when left unattended. Two-and-a-half times the price of a standard lead / acid battery, but spins that starter like gangbusters.

And anyway, vehicles are meant to be USED, not left stood.
