Hey all returning to the collective to seek knowledge again. My r1100gs did this last year an again last week seems a winter thing. Riding along changing down cant get a gear press shifter not moving down because it has not come back up head back to the garage and the shifter basically does not return so wd40 good wiggle bit of grease back in action works fine im asuming dirt and salts have got into parts they should not be. I tried to find an exploded view and parts on motorworks to replace im assuming a bush of some sorts?? Not sure what to type for it, anyway if normal an other riders have had it ill just clean a lube or if anyone knows parts let me know cheers all

I had a 1150 years ago. It was a common problem. No parts needed, just disassemble the ball joint, clean the gunge out, grease and reassemble. WD40 won't do the job effectively unless you separate the parts.

pull it to pieces , off the footrest , and the g/change shaft , clean , grease , copperslip/Loctite ( as preferred ) bolt it back together .
do it properly , do it once.
nothing to replace ( unless it's knacked ) it is called maintenance .

look here .
i'd think 7,8,9 +9 all need attention , but take it right off the box , and do it all . i doubt if the shaft is stuck on the g/box casing , but check it anyway.

I looked at the little ball joint and it was dirty but my main feeling of what was causing it was where the lever itself attaches to the foot rest, when i blasted that it started to free,

Perfect picture just what i needed to see, its all tight so nothing has worn i did think was there a sealed bush or bearing that dirt was in but like you said just needs a strip and a clean and grease probably noy been off in 10 years. Most appreciated

This is what you need…..!

New Rubber sponges

I bought 4 & 4 clip springs (2x 1150’s) for £16.27 from a BMW main dealer last week

Going to renew mine on both bikes over winter

Let us know how it feels! I disassemble and grease mine every year to keep it slick but there is wear and consequently slack so maybe replacing those sponges might help...

I have a big roll of closed-cell neoprene that I bought over 20yrs ago and it’s been handy for all sorts… Adapting phone cases, padding fork protectors, and new sponge (mini haemorrhoid) rings for the gear linkage are just some of them.

They're only a couple of quid each sponge, from a Motorrad main dealer
One of mine disintegrated when giving it the last wash of the year (probably been on for 21 years), so thought I would order 4 and do both my bikes over winter and ordered 4 of the funny clips too, to use or go into stock

You were right, just pulled it apart tighter then a nuns...... well you get the drift, i had to use the vice grips to get the pivot shaft out ordered a new set of nylon bushes and a pivot shaft as it wasn't much. not sure how it was working at all given the lack of movement, it will feel like I've got a quick shifter when that's back together haha
