Sticking throttle

This is my first winter on the GS1200, brrr. I noticed when I put the heated grips on ,the throttle sticks , has anyone else had the same problem?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks folks.

Yes, I discovered this the other day - see the thread link above - and a number of tossers seem to have had it too.

There is an easy fix, apparently, but I intend to take mine into the dealer - it's not something I should have to waste my time doing, and I think BMW should know about this issue.

Nobody here (so far) seems to think this is a big deal, but I think it could be. I discovered it on a quiet motorway and had plenty of time to think about it and work out what was causing the problem without compromising my safety, but what if you were in busy traffic and got distracted by the surprise of this happening for the first time? Could easily lead to a loss of situational awareness...
 
You are right Motorbaker, I discovered this whilst negotiating a series a dodgy bends covered in places with black ice. It wasn’t just the grips that were letting out a bit of heat, my rear end was doing its bit for global warming.

So why hasn't the problem been fixed? Can't be difficult - my other moto (Yamaha) has heated grips which get hotter than the GSA's and I don't have that problem :nenau

It's not. A few seconds work. :D, move the grip a fraction of a mm, or a plastic washer under the bar end.
Can also happen if your bike falls onto it's side.

Most people don't see the need for all the fuss and just give it a spray of silicon .

If it happens as frequently as it appears to based on the comments on here, then they should be doing something about it - even if it's just moving the switchgear along by a mm or so before bikes go out.

A potentially flawed design that is 'dangerous' on even 5% of machines is 5% too many; BMW should address that accordingly. I for one am glad I've read about it ahead of coming across it on the road.

I imagine it'll get looked at if someone comes unstuck because of it... :rob

Then maybe they should start with printing in big letters across the tank:

READ THE MANUAL ABOUT OIL!


It would be a more productive use of BuMW's time.

What page on the manual is it Richard?.....Surely you can't expect people to actually read ALL of it do you?

because most of the times the cause of it happening, happens while in the owners possesion. :blast



Someone knocks the bar end while it's parked in a car park, you knock the bar end against your garage wall etc etc.

Maybe, just maybe seeing as you perceive this to be life threatening, you use adrenalin fueled strength while gripping the bars as you endure yet another life threatening moment while riding your pride and joy around a supermarket car park while on the way to buy some root vegetables .
And in that nano second you can quite easily move the grips just a tad enough to cause you all this pain and grief which we can then blame onto the manufacturers in our innocence.
 
Oh well Ricdunn and Motorbaker, seems like another win double joins the throng.

Alas I fear the root vegetable comment will be wasted though!

Fair point - if it is caused by a drop or similar and it happens in no other cases, then why would BMW invest any time looking into it?

However if this isn't the case, would you expect to need to fit extra washers to a bike that costs (as a minimum) the best part of £10K to buy new?

Maybe it's just the engineer in me. Or maybe it's just that I'm not a motorcycling deity like the rest of you guys. :rob

Or maybe you have too much time on your hands, which can lead to feelings of anxiety or apprehension. :D

Christ, you know where I shop and have a psychological profile on me... If I wasn't anxious before I'm getting that way now :D
