Looking for some pointers please to sort out a rough running 1150gs, any ideas appreciated.
October built 2002 on an `03 plate, single spark, 86k miles.

Serviced front to back-- all filters and oils, TB`s balanced, valve clearances and end float adjusted as necessary. It does run but is lumpy and doesnt really smooth out at all whether its idling or has some revs on. The fast idle cable was dislodged but is in its proper position now.
New plugs fitted after checking the gaps. The spark on both plugs was a yellow colour not a healthy blue I would have preferred to see. Thats all I could see that wasn`t right, apart from being a bit smoky, not blue smoke, it was more like a really rich/over-fuelled smoky smoke.
Big hammer, skip....?
Any ideas chaps?
Thanks

If you've serviced it front to back, then you've done the air filter?.......Could be many things including injectors but the first thing I'd be checking next is your TPS, HT leads and coils, while your at it pull all the electrical connectors under the tank to check for corrosion (something which should be done every year or so anyway).

How long has it been misbehaving ie: Before the 'full service' or after?
Plugs same spec?.
Double check all connections to plugs, injectors, fuel are ok.
And re affirm the throttle is actually seated correctly. Surprising how high the bike revs unevenly before the second throttle starts opening and makes the bike run smooth.
Caught me out a few times and the smoke symtoms sound familiar too.

New air filter fitted.
Whats the score with the tps? There`s nothing in the haynes manual about it. Will get the tank off tomorrow and go through the connectors. Coils, h f and caps look okay but the yellow sparks didnt look very healthy... Thanks.

Was running rough when I bought it off ebay.. thought I could sort it out..:D
Plugs are different make, could do to cross reference them actually... cheers

Could you have balanced the throttle bodies with the cable displaced and now the cable is correctly seated the balance is off?

Good idea but it was definitely seated when I did the tb`s. Thanks

Before going much farther can I recommend a compression test?

If you have a slightly burnt valve no amount of parts except a valve and head gasket will fix it !

Look on here for Set the TPS If you can;t find it I'll pm you the details

Thanks Doc-- I did wonder. Have ordered a comp tester and will try the other stuff in the meantime.
The weak sparks are first on the list and I could have disturbed some wiring during the servo-ectomy.

Have you put the suction caps back on the TB's after balancing?

:blast R/H throttle cable un-seated?

It's often worth replacing the caps after TB balancing - they can deteriorate with age & pick up minute cracks, once disturbed. Usually shows a slightly unstable idle.

Failing this, & accepting the possible HT issue, sounds more like a burnt exhaust valve, which the suggested comp. test should show.

Squibb , both caps okay thanks.

nud1e unplugged the sensor and it made no difference but surely it would only make a difference, when unplugged, if it was okay?

Tried a few other things: Unplugged the wiring to the injectors in turn- the right makes no difference to the running. Removing the left one kills the engine.

The same applies to the spark plug leads- right one makes hardly any difference when removed. Removing the left one kills the engine.

Removed the right injector and it looks healthy with a good spray pattern. The engine runs the same with the injector hanging out...

Sooo, assuming the injector is okay it's got to be ignition related methinks.

Going to order some HT leads but don't particularly want to pay the rip off prices from motorworks etc- a search on here shows some alternatives from USA. Can anyone recommend any other alternatives pls?
Thanks

Suggests to me no compression on the right hand side.

With the injector replaced do both down pipes get hot at the same rate with the engine running?

Not sure on the rate of warming up- will check tomorrow. Going to check the compression when postie delivers the tester.
Cheers

Before spending money on HT leads try swopping them over and see if the problem changes cylinders :D.

Swapped the leads over- the problem is the same, ie still on the right side. Still waiting for the comp tester to arrive.....
