My son will be moving to Stockport soon and I was wondering what it is like to live in. What size, shopping, nightlive etc

Sizeble town 5 miles East (ish) of Manchester. Used to be the centre of the hat making industry (football club and HOG nickname THe Hatters).
Some very nice areas , some not so very nice areas, some areas to stay out of.
In other words, just like any town really.
20 minutes by bus to Manchester for the nightlife ( the 192 runs every 3-5 minutes). McVities buscuits are made there so sometimes there's a heavenly smell when they're baking.
On the whole though, not too bad a place at all :aidan
And no, I don't live there.

Oh the poor lad.... I was raised in Stockport and regularly go back. Like everywhere good bits and bad bits and some very bad bits. Shopping is awful, night life is worse (apart from Bredbury Hall which is fantastic).

Is he moving with work or with education or just a change!!

The Sale Sharks play at edgley Park (Stockport County FC ground) so there is top class rugby on tap - if you like that kinda thing.

I try to get across for a game or two every season and the town is always OK. Shopping is fine too, but that is in comparison to the IOM.:augie
 
Stockport is OK, but the country round it is brilliant

I also was raised in Stockport. It is OK as towns go. Used to have a decent market, not sure what it is like now. Robinson Beer is brewed in the town and is fine by me.

Head South along the A6 and take almost any side road and you end up in to GS country. It is where I learned to ride on a Honda SS50 and KH125. Plenty of twisties and fantastic views. Try Black rocks above Disley or Cobden Edge in Mellor.

You can try the cat and Fiddle, but the road between Whaley Bridge and Macclesfield is better now cause all the coppers are on the Cat.:rolleyes:

There are worse places than Stockport to live but I moved out and up in the World to wonderful West Ham:blast

i used to live in the suburbs of stockport in the heatons heaton chapel heaton norris heaton mersey etc you get the idea. Mcvities is on the A6 heaton chapel and a couple miles out of the town centre. the town has the ususal super stores and big tesco and the like with a typical 80's town centre. the is a swimmingpool cinema complex and 15 to 20 mins into the heart of manchester. public transport is brill . and as some have said opposite direcion to manchester ther is some great countryside.

i moved for work not because i didn't like the place.

he'll find his feet there and have fun i wouldn't worry

It's not the prettiest town on earth but it's useful enough. For me what is around Stockport interests me more. Large climbing wall in marple, stockport school of motorcycling based in Hazel grove got me on the path to a GS last year :thumb2, Bramhall is a nice enough town and slightly less up it's own arse than Wilmslow, Aderley Edge or Hale. You've got Manchester up the road. Head east on the M60 and you have the trafford centre which is a cathedral of shopping. Around the Trafford centre is an indoor snow dome and golf driving range next to that. That's about 10 - 15 mins from stockport by car. Airport is about the same time distance so he can fly home to hi mammy if it all gets too much.

I'm in Altrincham right now which is again about 20 mins from Stockport by bike (GS) :D

He rang yesterday to say the place he had been looking at is now not a goer :blast

He's now going to veiw properites in Wilmslow. Is it ok

Wilmslow - mostly a different kettle of fish to Stockport. Generally thought of as pretty posh (especially by those who live there!)

When I lived in Altrincham, we used to go out in Wilmslow as it had a few decent pubs and clubs - however that was 20 years ago, so you'll be better off with someone who has recent experience :) - I think everywherevirtually knows the area.

By the way Mandy, as has been said Wilmslow is completely fdifferent, much more up market, lovely town centre, Porsches, Ferraris and Lambos everywhere and very close to the Airport too. ALderly Edge is down the road and thats lovely. I spent alot of my youth racing Cycles around that area and its so nice. Country Pubs are superb.

Stockport is OK, born in Cheadle Heath, still love going "home" every now & again to watch Stockport County, even though I`ve been left over 40 years.
As to Wilmslow, well your talking "WAGS at large", bloody expensive but very nice........:thumb

I was born there. It's good n bad as others have said. Close enough to Manchester for good shopping and nightlife :thumb

quite right Andy T. I realised what I'd said when I checked the post. :blast

My folks have lived in Wilmslow for 20 years. My bros lives in Macclesfield and I live in Alty. Wilmslow is a whole different kettle of fish to Stockport.

Some people think it's something a bit special but to me its just a normal town that has too many estate agents and old ladies boutiques. Crime is low apart from the odd burglary and bike theft. Good amount of pubs. It has a Tesco extra, a Sainsburys, a Waitrose, Boots, Blacks, WHsmiths, Pizza Express and lots of local restaurants. It's 3 miles from the airport. A lot of people travel into Wilmslow for a night out whilst the locals head out of Wilmslow to the country pubs. Because of the influx of youngsters from outside it often has a disproportionate amount of trouble at night in the centre of the town. half a mile outside town it's dead... ghost town.

The demographic is quite mature :augie and during the day it's quite busy due to the amount of offices.

PM me if you have any questions on the area. I co-authored the 50 best cycle rides in Cheshire in my youth so know a fair bit. thinking about doing a GS version now :D
