I understand from a dealer that the 1200GSA will be phased out the middle of2014 with no current replacement date.
With the new 800GSA due will BMW replace the current 1200GSA?

Yes they will replace it, BMW has already stated there is a new water cooled version to be expected "in a similar time frame to the last GSA models". An 800 GSA is no replacement for the big boy and besides they have sold thousands of 1200 GSA's. It's a huge seller for them.

Thats a bit like saying will vw replace the golf!

Its convenient to say 'no replacement date' , means they get punters into the new GS now rather than them hanging onto their cash for a GSA next year.

I'll be sticking with my anniversary GSA until I get a go on the Watercooled version then, even though I've tried the new GS & really rate it.
Will give me another year to save up :D

Hope they sort the rattly engine by next year. Then I might be interested as well. If not its stick with the old for me.

I've got a 2010 GSA, and it would take a very special bike to make me trade up this time......and if it's like the new WC 1200 I doubt I'd bother.

Im sure BMW could continue production of the current Adventure AND bring in a new LC version alongside. Both would sell nicely.

Why the ???. Im sure the new bike is fab and it will always attract those who want the latest and greatest product. But there are plenty of people who would prefer the air cooled model. It's a way to further close in on the adventure trail market without increasing development costs.

I think BMW would be losing a trick by not running both models at least for a while. Though that is assuming the old model can keep up with EU legislation without being further emasculated.

They've never done that before, new model always overtakes the old, they do a 'run-out' offer on the old

Happened with the

R100GSPD (& Basic)
R1100GS
R1150GS (& Adv)
R1200GS (& now Adv)

Production costs would be too high to keep outgoing models, any longer than necessary

Usually coincides with August factory shutdown, every time

But from a pure marketing point of view the business *could* sell both models in parallel. I believe in the past (and maybe this time) the new bikes were built on the old production line so keeping the old one wasn't an option.

But they are still making the old frames, engines, chassis etc to build into hexhead GSAs, so why not put up a big marquee at Chez BWM Towers to keep the old line going a bit longer and see what happens.

I think that production of the air-cooled engine will cease, it makes no sense to continue with it now that they have a superior new water cooled engine, anyway emissions regs are getting ever tighter and the air cooled engine just won't be able to cut the mustard any more.

Lc or not LC? Now that is the question.

It is interesting. I've had a good few gsa's and 1 gs, the Rallye, which I've just come back from a trip to Prague in all THAT rain. I can honestly say that the GSA gives loads, and I mean loads more wind/rain protection. I thought I'd go for the lighter GS, and the GSA is a heavy brute full of gas, but I really missed the 400 mile tank range and the extra wind and rain protection. So off I went, thinking of a LC...it was good, but rattly and full of lots of plastic. Better than a gs or gsa? Well, not really, just different, and not for me. If I want more speed, the K1300s comes out...though not very often these days. I just want a comfy, reliable, tried and tested bike that'll do the job. So, a 90yr anniversary GSA got the vote- and with 2K worth of freebies, and the dealer giving me £11500 p/x for my rallye against a fully loaded 90yr GSA, with free metal panniers, satnav, pannier bags, tinted screen, tank bag- and just 3K to change, it was a total no-brainer. I'll watch as the LC's go through all the teething issues, and may fall for its charms, but I'm not convinced as yet.

If you've been to Spandau, you would know all bikes are built to order (or a standard spec order)

On the line they can build anything from the day's schedule - so a K1300S could be on the line, followed by a 12GS WC and then a F800GT

They don't 'block' manufacture all bikes in batches

My guess is that they have scheduled and forecast worldwide numbers long ago of 12GSA's for 2013, maybe even down to the spec too, all components will be ready (& sourced/made long ago) to build/assemble and when they're sold...............they're sold

This usually happens by late July and 'built' GSA bikes will sit in crates, ready for despatch, when the workers come back from the shutdown, autumn production will focus on the existing WC GS, the new RT and GSA

The factory has no capacity to manufacture an outgoing obsolete model

And that would be a good guess :thumby:

As far as spec goes, if you don't want your GSA to have all the bells & whistles then you better place your order now as all bikes built for stock with come fully loaded ...... tis the BMW way :D

A work colleague has just had a very generous trade in of his triple black gs for a new triple black gsa with everything...

I would if I could - it's the best looking, has the greatest road presence and the comfort of two years warranty...

As it is, a complete career change and a masters degree mean humble pie for the next few years... keep my old donkey running sweet and save pennies, then maybe an lc gsa triple black.... yum...

Speaking to my local dealer yesterday and they said they are expecting both the LC version of the RT1200 and 1200 GSA to be for sale in the Spring (2014) hence the number of deals available on current Hexhead versions at the moment to clear stock as no more being produced. Quite a few photos of the new LC RT on the web under testing, expect someone to capture the GSA soon also.
