Strange audio problem

All of a sudden, the sound generated by my laptop has developed a very strong echo. Speech is particularly affected. Sounds as if everything's being spoken in an old victorian khazi.

All output devices are the same - internal and external speakers plus headphones. I've checked the settings, nothing's changed (couldn't find an echometer).

Any ideas?
