Hi all,

I'm having a strange noise (wow a boxer that makes strange noises, how uncommon ;0) with my starter motor. Generally happens on a cold start. I hit the starter, the motor turns over, then kicks in, then a crsshhhhhhhhhhhh noise. Doesn't allways do it. Anything to worry about?

The bike is a 2001 850 with 33k on the clock.

Cheers

Matt

i guess everyone has it at a certain number of km; it can be easyly fixed by following this article:

Thanks,
Dan

I get the same noise (occasionally).. Independent BMW trained chap said nothing to worry about... this was last year. If you can live with the noise then do so. At some point the starter will fall apart.. but for completely different reasons that the article posted simply does not address. pretty simple to fix.. only recently someone in this section had his starter professionally rebuilt for £25.

(magnets inside the starter are glued in place - eventually the glue fails and they need to be reattached.)

aha, cool, it doesn't happen often enough to get worried about, and it isn't the sort of nosie that makes you think your bike is eating bits of itself.

i'd clean it if i were you - only 2 bolts to unmount it and then 4 more to get inside of it; 1 hr job max.
