Hi All,
I have a 1200GS Twin Cam model. Only done 3K but have noticed on starting sometimes I get an intermittent noise on start up from cold. Sounds like metal on metal! The oil level is fine and I have checked nothing is loose on the bike.Just wondered if anybody else has experienced this with their bike. No warning lights on, all the checks run through ok before I start it and it runs great. It just sounds wrong thats all. Obviously there will be the usual`Piss take` comments but I wondered if anybody else has experienced this before I take it back to the dealer to check if everything is ok. Cheers.

If the twin cams have the same cam chain tensioner as the old 1200 it will be that and no problem. Sounds a bit odd but they all do that sir:thumb

Bet it only does it for a couple of seconds till the oil has circulated, my twin cam GS did the same. Nothing too worry about. :comfort

Thanks for the replies from you & Sgt Bilco. Yeah, it does sound pretty strange but like you say, it only lasts for a couple of seconds. It never crossed my mind that it could be cam chain tensioner and oil circulation on start up.
Cheers guys :thumb2

Could it be the exhaust flappy thing starting to stick? I think that the flap is cycled open and closed by the bike at startup. Mine used to do that at start up but eventually went quiet again before I had a chance to get it sorted.

Load of threads here about removing or fixing the flap.

Hi Tommac,
Thanks for your input but I don`t think its the exhaust valve sticking. I have checked it and the cable seems fine and it appears ok. I will however have another look following what you have suggested.
Thanks :thumb2

My twin cam makes a funny squeaky noise on start up sometimes. Usually after washing it. I reckon it's the alternator belt.

My twink rattles a bit on starting from cold, I just leave it to idle for a few seconds and the rattling stops. Then I ride off happy. Sounds like a cam chain tensioner.

My 2010 TC squeaks briefly after a wash too. And I get the od rattle every now and again for a split second on startup. Don't they call that character?

Neil
