Evening all,

Need a bit of technical advice here. My R1150GS has started making quite a rattle.

The sound definitely sounds like tappets rattling but I'm wondering how come it has started so early on in its life. I have an R850R that's covered 32 000 miles and the tappets have only just started to dance now.

Bike was built & registered new in June 2002 and has covered 6600 kms.

I started it up to have a listen for other strange noises tonight & also heard a "Bang" or "Crack" as I started it up.

It's not using oil, seems to be pulling fine & fuel consumption is ok.

It's had the obligatory pre-delivery service, first service (1000km) and that's it to date. It's still new!

Is it time to adjust the valve clearances already? What was the "Bang"? A weak valve spring?

If anyone knows the answer, I'd really appreciate some help.

Thanks

Tok

The 'Crack'.

The 'crack noise sounde like someone hitting the cylinder fins with a hammer (to me any how) .

This noise usually only occurs when the engine is hot and you come to start up again after 10 or so minutes. Its an ignition abnormality that is creating the sound, most likely its residue fuel lingering about inside the combustion chamber (space between the cylinder head underside and the piston crown...put that bit in to passify the 'techies'.)

So when you turn on the ignition and crank her up 'POW' instant detonation created by the (externally generated... more techie stuff) spark. To prove my point this sound is the same; only repeated more so, when the engine is under load and 'pinks' or more correctly detonates.

There is no cure and it is more likely to happen if you tend to blip the throttle just before switching off (which of course you should not do any way...should you!).

Probably delaying your start up to longer than 5-10 mins might prove effective, but its not going to do any harm...unless the #*<>~ ] * jumps or snaps cue to adverse kickback!

I'm with Gauloises

earplugs stuffed in so that I can't hear any of those noises - I really don't want to know. Or the other option I have considered is a loud pipe to drown out all those other noises.

I do believe that someone on this board once said something like - " I'm a mechanic, I know what those noises mean and how much they're going to cost" (I'm paraphrasing) - me, I'd rather not know.

Cheers!

Thanks for the help.

I bought some ear plugs and the noise has gone.

In fact, so much noise has gone , I wear them 24/7 now!
