I have a 09 gs with 26k miles on it and it has started to make a road speed related noise. It sounds like it could be a bearing or gear train sort of noise. The best way that I can describe it is that the noise is exactly the same droning noise as a military landrover makes on tarmac roads.

The noise is loud enough to be heard at 50 - 60 mph and is accompanied by a slight vibration felt through the foot rests and bars.

At first I thought the dreaded FD, but I have checked for any play, none apparent. Also no oil leaks what so ever. This afternoon I drained the FD oil and the gearbox oil. Both were very clean with no trace of metal in the oil or on the mag plugs.

There appears to be no play or wear in the front wheel bearings, and I have just fitted a new Tourance on the wheel as well.

The bike is running well and handeling is fine, it's just this really annoying noise and the feeling of doom that I have because of it.

Has anyone else experienced this or does any one have any ideas?:nenau

When I say that I've just fitted a new Tourance to the front wheel, I mean just 100 miles ago and the noise was there before and is still there unchanged!

Without hearing it, it is difficult to comment. Does it get louder when leant over mid-corner?

My front Tourance is slightly noisy, it gets worse when cranked over.

First thing is to check the tyre is fitted the correct way round (I kid you not) and the tyre pressures are correct. The tyres are directionally marked on the sidewalls. Also inspect both tyres closely for irregular wear patterns etc.

Maybe check the torque settings of suspension and steering components, especially the lower yoke clamp bolts which have been known to be loose from build.

Also spin the wheels and visually check for wobble or runout.

Check the drive shaft. It's speed is directly associated with road speed.
Also check wheel bearings.

Me too on 09 GSA but have always assumed it's the heidennau k60s I'm running.

Rear tyre then. The noise from the military land rovers is tyre noise.

If it is road speed related then it has to be wheel related. So tyres, brakes, shaft drive.

I have now changed the oil in the gear box and FD, checked the drive shaft, both front and rear wheel bearings, and checked all running gear and frame. I still can't find a single thing wrong but still have the noise.

It must be the tyres, but I can't understand why it started with the old tyres which had 14k miles on them , and then continued with the new tyres!

There is no problem with the handling or the engine, and with all the checks that I've just done I have complete confidence in the bike. It's just a mystery!

I suspect that like myself, you probably didn't notice the tyre noise with your original set of tyres until they were well worn, but now you are in tune with the noise you can hear it all the time.

I can sometimes hear the tyre noise early into the ride when cornering then I seem to notice it for the rest of the ride, unless I mentally tune it out or put some tunes on.
