Hello,

I have noticed a rather loud and weird whine coming from the front of the engine on my 2002 1150GS. It seems to happen on start up and lasts for a couple of hundered yards. Sort of a comination of whine, screach and tweet.

I've looked for nesting birds in the sump bash plate, but there are on non.

Could it be the belt at the front, needs attention?

Also, my battery is going flat and it's a new one (4 months old-if that).

Cheers for any advice.

Dave

Thanks for all the help.

If it's alternator belt...and I go in and check it out for tension. Is there anything else I should look out for? Any 'not so obvious' signs that it needs replacing?

Anything to look out for?

Is it an easy enough job to adjust said tension?

Cheers

Dave

If it is just a loose belt, you can tension it easily with just basic tools.
There is a guide on here written by Steptoe on how to do it.
Whilst you are in there it may be worth removing and checking the belt for damage.BWM give a service life of 36K miles.
Check for missing teeth, cracks and fraying. Also check the pulleys for damage and that the alternator spins smoothly and easily.
Good luck.Col.
