Streetguard 3 - your experience?

To anyone with the SG3 jacket & trousers...

What are they like, in crap conditions and all-year round?

Thinking of these instead of Hein Gericke kit, as HG are now too expensive and their warranty is worthless at their prices.

Just have the jacket, warm and dry even in pouring rain.
Downside, mines 6 months old and getting a brown tinge to it and one tooth on the zip has fell off.
Its a great jacket but if I had to choose again I dont know if I'd go for it.

Had streetguard 2 and this was ok ,except the lack of pockets (was I too fussy). Never leaked kept me warm in the cold and not too hot when warm.
Claimed under warrantee due to it turning brown,wished I hadnt as the replacement was streeguard 3 .But I just could not get one to fit me despite my dealer, NOG, being very helpful and getting me different sizes to try . Also very very stiff ,but this may reduce with use.
I am sure that it is technically excellent but make sure you are happy with fit and accept the pockets are not the best.

Mine's a year old, still great. Warm, dry. Prefer the fit over my twat suit, I don't mind the lack of external pockets. Jacket liner back in, now just 4C in Aberdeen mornings. But haven't needed trouser liner yet. No quality issues, well-made suit.

Very happy with mine. Had it 17 months and absolutely no complaints at all. It does what it says in the BMW brochure - good in hot climate, warm (ok at down to 8c without the liner and merely wearing a thin Craft top / bottoms) and waterproof. I also find that the armour moulds to body shape once it warms up.

What are you fellows made of? I put the liners back in mine (Streetguard 2)when it gets below 15 degrees.

My suit works well in a wide range of temperatures and my jacket is now 4 years old and still fine, although the connecting zip is getting a bit iffy. The trousers turned brown so I had them replaced under warranty after two seasons. I shouldn't have bothered because the replacement pair were an inch longer (the last thing I need) depite being marked as the same size, and they turned brown in one season.

A competent suit overall, but they should have sorted the colour fading problem.

rubbish zipper on streetguard 3

I am currently awaiting my second replacement jacket in 20 months.

My first SG3 jacket deleoped a wobbly zipper tooth (3rd tooth up from bottom) which then fell off making the jacket unserviceable. This was within 10 months. It was used 5 days a week. I wasn't bad to it- my previous jacket (a Hein gericke) lasted over 7 years with intact zippers).

I was replaced under warranty.

I used the replacement jacket very carefully, zipping the thing up in slow motion! Another 10 months and the 3rd tooth up is rotating again. I am using superglue on it every week or two whilst waiting for BMW. They have agreed to replace it but there are no jackets in stock and they can't even say when they will be available.

Given the price of the thing, I really hoped that this would be my jacket for the next 5+ years. However since it seems like it only lasts 10 months on a zipper, i expect I'll be left with a US jacket out of warranty by the end of 2011.
Then I'll get something with Gortex "Lockout" zipper.

The shame is that the SG3 jacket and trouser combo are really good. They really are good over a wide range of temperatures, are very waterproof (except for the left outer pocket that turns into a water container in the rain). And a bonus is they are available in a 52" chest with sufficient length for a 6'5" bloke. Most manufacturers fail to cater for the larger oaf.

SG3

I have just replaced my Rukka for one given the price of Rukkas and i got a reasonale deal on an SG3 before the VAT increase.

First inpressions are, is that it is a suit of armour and will protect you in an unplanned off. It is very stiff but i have a BMW comfort shell suit for the summer and this was the same, but has bedded in nicely.

With the liner in, i can ride around in a long sleeved t shirt without feeling the cold too much and i have room for another thicker layer like a fleece if reqd and i reckon i should be sorted. It appears very windproof. I have only experience one downpout and the water just ran off, keeping me nice and dry.

As it is going to be my winter suit i cant really see me taking the liner out....just change over to the summer suit so cant really comment there.

The armour does become more flexible when it is warmed by body temp, but the hip armour is a bit restrictive so thinking of swapping that for some HG Hipporotec thinn stuff ( this was also advised by the vendor)

The front zip is a big chumky affair and not the smoothest at the moment but if it does not bed in, will get a drop of silicone spry on it.

My only real complaint is the jacket to trouser attachment zip. Far to small toothed and too fiddly to easily do up. They should have made it like the Rukka zip which is alot more chunky. I am not convinced it will last, but as long as it goes in the 2 year warranty period.....

I'm not over fussed if it fades either.....again in the warranty period. Id after that, well, hey Ho, as long it still keeps me warm and dry.....

Overall, i like it. Not the cheapest, but not the most expensive either.

Now if they made it with WARERPROOF cargo pockets, that would be good!!

July update ... the lower teeth broke off a week or so ago, and this morning the zipper fell off. Bad news.

Good news is BMW Dundee says it's still under warranty and they will replace the jacket if I send it down to them.

Very pleasant afternoon run down to BMW Motorrad in Dundee. They looked out the receipts on their system and found the jacket/trousers purchase was within 2 years (mid-August 2009). BMW has changed the zip design.

They are to send a new replacement jacket up to BMW Aberdeen for me, and have even offered to change the colour from silver/orange/black (didn't wear well, and doesn't now go with my ex-Bakerman 30 year anniversary GS) to the black/silver one. Happiness.
