Hopefully not the end of my beloved SP2720...

Turn on and go though boot-up and it prompts for screen calibration. That's obviously not normal. Pressing the screen as instructed gives a cross hair but it continues to ask for screen presses, seems stuck in a loop.

It did this a couple of times on a recent family trip to France in the cage but managed to sort itself out.

Yesterday led a ride-out into Wales. Mounted sat nav on the bike early, switched on and loaded route as usual. Turned off and went back inside to get kitted up. Once back on the bike it started doing the calibrate screen loop 'trick'. Nothing I did seemed to stop it though eventually it relented, loaded the route and then started again a mile down the road. I turned it on and off a few times with little success until the first stop, occasionally it would do a mile or so before starting the loop again. In the end I gave up and left it off, luckily I knew most of the route and managed to string the bits I didn't know together without missing a turn. Tried again a few times during the day with the same result. If left to carry on in the loop there was audible clicking via the Autocom as if buttons or the screen were being pressed.

There has been a little internal screen misting, that goes if it's a warm day, for over a year. This loop fault occurs on the bike cradle and car lead so it's not power related. Though oddly it hasn't happened yet on the mains adapter but that may just be coincidence or a temperature/humidity thing?

I've taken the whole thing to bits and it's in the airing cupboard drying out at the moment, though there was no evidence of moisture inside. I've also cleaned the screen edges, gasket and bezel in case there was a piece of grit trapped in there pressing the screen. Though I didn't find anything obvious.

I hope I can sort this out as a/ I can't afford a Zumo at the moment and b/ I really like the 2720, it's (to date) been rugged and dependable and been a great sat nav.

Do Garmin still do service exchange on the 2720 or have they dropped support :nenau

Bumpkin,

I agree with Aidan, these devices are no longer supported.

:augie I do know where there's a *new* 2610, boxed with all its bits, City Nav V8 yellow/orange colour slip with unlock code .. coz I looked .. it even has the film protector across the screen, its that new. I have been waiting for 'someone' to give me all details and offer up in 4sale section.

I reckon it may fetch 100 beer tokens :blast

If interested, pm over the weekend and I shall next week let you know who to call.

Wow, RAM-man, that's very nice offer, an as new 2610 for that money. However, having just stumped up for a map upgrade I want to persist with trying to sort out my 2720. The non NT mapping on the 2610 will only get further out of date and I think I would find that frustrating enough to justify getting a Zumo albeit next year.

I could be extremely unscrupulous and bite off your hand and then flog it eBay for more, I reckon, but; a/ I'm not that sort of person, and b/ I think it needs to go to a deserving member of this parish (or another of your choosing) at your capable discretion.

I've just reassembled my StreetPilot and so far all seems well though this is on mains power. I'll leave it powered up on the bike outside for an hour and see what happens. Hopefully it was a piece of grit twix bezel/gasket and screen. Cleaned that with a baby wipe and soft cloth.

Here's hoping for many years more sterling service :hide

Nice offer there Ram-Man. :clap:clap

I hope it works for you Bumpkin. The newer Garmin units don't seem to offer the same customisable options as our old StreetPilots unfortunately.

Navigated from Ledbury to Dochester last night in the cage with no issues, will test in the bike next week but the strip and screen/gasket/bezel clean seems to have sorted it :JB

Delighted to hear that the "repair" went well. Garmin offered me an exchange 2820 a couple of weeks ago for £165 - but the missing Bluetooth function is not worth that much to me.

The venerable 2720...

Hi Bumpkin,
Had a very similar experience. After 3+ years all weather use, following a horribly wet day in Aug last year, it flipped into the same 'recalibrate the screen' nose dive, and that seemed to be that.
I reluctantly replaced it with a cheap UK only Zumo for my then daily medical courier riding work, scooting about the south east.
After retiring the 2720 to the airing cupboard for a few days, firing it up again in the car, it was back to normal. Apart from the very occasional dummy spitting moment, it is fine!! :thumb
Now I just use it on 4 wheels, recently drove 2,400 miles thru' France and Spain, didn't miss a beat.
They're good, don't throw it/replace it 'til it really stops!!
HTH,
Regards
Charlie

A 150 mile ride on the bike yesterday saw my StreetPilot performing as expected, no unprompted screen presses, navigated start to end without issue. The screen/gasket/bezel clean seems to have sorted it. Very happy with the result of my tinkering :thumb2

Bumpkin - just seen this thread.
When I was in Turkey last year I had a similar problem. I too thought that my 5 year old trusty had finally bit the dust. However, on the off chance that it was a dirty touch screen, I gave it a gentle clean with window cleaner and hey presto, sorted.
I'm just going through the throws of trying to decide whether to upgrade to a 660, but as it ain't bust......I may just keep my hand in my pocket!

Ive got a 2720, never let me down. over 40,000 miles with it. great bit of kit. My new Zumo 660 is much better though:thumb2

That's an interesting comment. My 2720 is currently on a Motorrad Concepts mount which just allows sight of the rev counter. I'm assuming that the bolt pitch is the same for the 660 mount but will it obstruct more of the clocks?

Andy, Took me 10 minutes to swap mounts. Four screws out, new mount on, same screws, job done. Just pulled out the old wires and threaded the new. The unit is pertect above the clocks:thumb2
The 660 is no wider or taller than the 2720, it's the screen is so much bigger. I have posted pictures on here of the switch over using the same mount.

I know that there is more impetous to post negatively when you have an axe to grind so perhaps all the problems you read about the 660 are not statistically relevant! None the less, when you have had such a trouble free experience with an older unit, it does make you hesitate when deciding to change!

I'm in the same boat having a 2720 yet lusting after the 660 as a means of effectively consolidating a lot of the other stuff plugged into my Autocom into one neat unit. Separate MP3 player and Bluetooth dongle could go. However, cost is a deciding factor for me, I'll probably be using the 2720 for some years to come.
