Like you I have the Streetpilot III - it is my first electric map too. I have the book and to be fair, it was worth sitting down and reading the manual - doing anything on the Pilot is quite slow, typing in the post code, you only need the first 4 digits and then as it works down the possibles you can jump to the full address if it lists it, to save putting in the rest of the code.

It works OK, but you do need to know where you are going and ignore it at some junctions. I haven't tried it somewhere I don't know yet, but tomorrow will tell as I have to go to the middle of Leeds (there are dragons and monsters in there I am told). I am not used to cities - I avoid them to be honest, I like open country with cows and sheep! So I am going to have another read in bit to try and learn another part of the very complicated features.

Like mobile phones that you can take pictures with, listen to music on etc...I can use them tomake a call and even send a text. I think GPS things fall into the same category. If you have the kind of brain that works like they do you'll be OK. I have had a life on reading a map and just do not function like digital devices seem to want me to.:blast

Good luck. I'll let you know how I get on, if the dragons and monsters don't eat me.:D

Try and get a 256mb memory card for it

That will hold all UK and a tadge of france/belguim

I still use mine on me bikes
always gets me there and back and great for doing rides/tours on that you have programed and sent to yer unit :thumb2

Just use it as a basic sat nav and ye wont go wrong, its tough and reliable.

me n digger06 got around Romania , Bulgaria and Eastern Europe by just following the base map and the pink wiggly line on the screen:eek:

I use this one for my XT350 as a speedo

set it on page and use the trip and speedo works fine:thumb2

thanks for the input.ive got all the software installed and the card reader.when i registered it with garmin i got a free 2009 navigator disc their posting to me.theres also a software update too.just need to source a cheap mains suppy for it.it came with a 128meg card.is that enough?

To pay for an unlock code for those maps would cost a bit

See what version is installed on the unit
V8 and a 128mb card will probebly give you england and wales area
As I said in a previous post if you get a 256mb card you can load all Uk and Ireland
You can pick up more 128 mb cards and keep swapping them in the unit as you go out of one area loaded - but you have to only use routes or go-toos that are on the card loaded otherwise it dont work / gets confused
If yer follow me posting

Well, the Streetpilot III worked fairly well in the Leeds city centre - but it didn't recognise the post code, but found the full address when that was put in. However, it does choose some weird routes. Going from Uttoxeter to Leeds all the way up the M1 as far as Barnsley it wanted me to turn round and go back south - it had another route in mind up through the hills and across Manchester!
I ignored it and went up the M1 past Sheffield, once past Barnsley it agreed and put me on the M1, where I already was. From there on it guided me reasonably weel, but you do need to get used to the directions and what it means at bear offs, rather than proper junctions. Proper junctions are fine, but where there are several rounds leading off it is a bit ambiguous in how it describes what you need to do.

The next day I was going to kent and Sussex, it didn't like that at all and hadn't logged the new address. It did eventually when I stopped for breakfast and I rejigged the address and put it in again. It might just be me getting used to it, which I am.

I must find out how much map I have in it. I wouldn't know where to look to find the card, so no idea how big a card I have or what maps are in, but it is supposed to have the whole of Europe in it. Will go and have a play in minute when I have an hour to clean it from yesterday.
