my new Streetpilot sunshade arrived from the states. I've not tried it yet but itss nothing more than a piece of plastic with a card insert to stiffen it up an held to the GPS with stick on Velcro...!! If anyones interested I'll stick up a picture with the dimensions so you can make your own.

I am interested in this as having just purchased an SPIII I have found that I get glare in this abnormally bright weather we are having.

TIA

Sorry I don't have a close-up available right now, but here's a rough view of CycoActive's sunshade...

Pretty simple really. Attaches with Velcro, stays on just fine, does its job well.

:)

Thanks for that Arch.

I’m looking around for some material to fashion into a sunshade at the moment; I should be able to do that even with my arthritic shaky hands. ;)

By the way, nice bike. :D

Refer to "Blue Peter" i.e. old washing up liquid bottle and some double sided selotape. Or, better still. Find an old bottle made of black plastic and cut the base out and shape it accordingly.:p

Actually, I've not found the need for this sort of shade on my SPIII. The only time I've had trouble seeing the display is when the sun is directly behind and shining over my head. Adjusting the angle that the unit is mounted at helps.

I'm offshore at the moment so can't get the dimensions but as you will see (just about...), it just fits over the top of the GPS unit and folds down at each side. It is held on by velcro and actually worked very well. I believe the BMW units have anti glare glass which the normal Garmin SP3's do not. I'm not home for another week but I'll put a picture of the shade on the forum with dimensions.

Have Fun

Oh yes they do. According to my handbook.

Stop trying to justify your spending £200 more than you needed to.

Thanks, sandbaggerone. Yea, making one isn't a real difficult proposition. Oh and btw, I forgot to mention that this is Touratech's shade. (TT's stuff is sold by CycoActive here in the States.) Anyway, been using various GPS units on bikes for many years now and as has been pointed out, a sunshade isn't an absolute necessity, but it does make a meaningful difference. Especially here in Texas where the sun's been hammering down relentlessly as of late! Really looking forward to autumn & winter...

Night Mode

Have not tried it but it came to mind one evening at sunset when the SPIII automatically switched to night mode. The contrast was far more substantial and really visible.

I keep meaning to find how you can adjust sunset times so that I can try it one sunny day. But I always forget...

SPIII / Navigator screens

I've had a Navigator & an SPIII in the last few months and the screens are different.

The Navigator had a matt finish screen which worked very well. The SPIII has a polished screen which catches reflections. Not sure about the scratch resistance on the SPCIII either (road dust wiped off with gloves etc.) so I've left the protective plastic supplied with the unit on. Seems to work but as it's polythene I guess it won't last long.

I'm going to try some of that protective plastic film used for Palm Pilot screens.

Attached pics of Touratech sun shade.
Hope this helps with the 'home made' creation!

2nd pic

BTW, my shade has 'warped' along the top; presumably due to the material used.
Must have been the intense heat of the summer.........

Yep, especially in my previous car - which had a glass 'sun roof' that reflected on the screen.
BTW, if the SPIII gets hot on the front of the dashboard the screen fades - but gets better once it cools down. (Also caused the sunscreen to buckle.)
Gave me a fright 1st time it happened though, & now I remove it if leaving the car facing into sunlight.
