I have a streetpilot 1 and bought as an Atlantic basemap with docs to veryify but when trying to find cities, all I can get are US cities.Does this indicate that it is the America's Basemap which is loaded at source?. Any advice appreciated

Whilst damn annoying to get the US version if you have paid good money for the Atlantic version, do bear in mind that the base map is as good as useless anyway. It is so inaccurate as to be vituallyunuseable

IMHO the inclusion of a base map at all is simply a ploy to enable them to fleece European buyers, whilst selling the US version at a much lower price.

I have loaded most of the UK in mapsource form so can and how do I get Uk cities when in find mode?

Rod

As suggested I turned the unit on and whilst it refers to Garmin Corp etc no mention is made of either America or Atlantic versions

Adrian,
I'm not familiar witht the Streetpilot 1, but with Streetpilot 3 and GPS 5 when you press find you get up a menu giving a list of 6 different options one of which is cities. If you highlight that and then press enter you should get either a list or a menu asking you to chose nearest or by name. You then step through by using the toggle switch.

Hope that is some help although as I said at the start, it may be different on version 1

Dennis

Thanks Dennis

The SP1 uses the same system but when I select cities and type in a city ie York, only US cities of that name are listed. Do you get UK cities?

I tend to agree - I have a Streetpilot Colormap with the American base map and have loaded in the UK which takes me right down to my own house and the Dutchmans house.....

Have Fun

Adrian,

No I don't get the american cities once the UK maps are loaded. Which Mapsource software are you using ? Have you tried using the find command from within Mapsource on your PC. Could it be that you are using the European Metroguide whic I don't think supports the find function.

Even so, I still don't understand why it picks up the US cities. I would also suggest trying to reload the Maps. I take it that you have selected them within mapsource (they should turn pink when selected)

Thanks dennis, I will have a mess with it today and try as you have suggested. If I put in a uk address it will find it on mapsource but if I only have a city which I want to find then only US options are available. I know this could be user trouble so I will have a play!

Pity I could get to the Tech days last weekend!

Adrian,

Just a thought. If there was enough interest, I would be happy to host a similar GPS day/weekend in Wales. It's about the same distance for you and ther may well be others further south that couldn't make the trip north.

Whilst I wouldn't classify myself as an expert on GPS, I have experience of 3 or 4 different types of units + most of the Mapsource software

If anyone is interested, let's have some suggestions of dates.

same problem adrian

Adrian i seem to have the same problem as yourself i can search for a street no and name even a post code but when trying to access cities it shows me a list of overseas cities not uk cities
must be that shared software ?? you think

Could be Jon, I will try and get hold of a different mapsource to compare.

I agree.
I've had an e-trex vista with USA base map. I simply download Mapsource R&R into it.
I tried to use the base map in America and found myself driving across no mans land according to the GPS but was actually on a decent sized road! The collins road atlas at 20 miles to the inch was MORE detailed!!
I assume the SP 1 has data cards. You should just load up the Mapsource detail.

Now sorted!

It appears that my unit has the America's base map and that is why only American cities are being displayed. Although I have UK Metroguide loaded, only UK cities covered by the data card will be displayed. The problem has been that whilst I have been attempting to find UK cities, the unit will only display these if it has acquired the satelites, not inside as it then reverts back to the base map ie America.

Jon B you may also have a US model as the software disk is ok

Thanks for your help guys
