Oh Dear, tried to fit my new can tonight and appear to have locked up the threads in the nut located on the footrest hanger. I have tried other, same size bolts and they al;l lock up after a coupe of turns. Anyone done this and did you have an imaginative cure?
Thanks

bolt

Does your new can use the same bolt!! or is the backet wider on the new can, meaning your OE bolt is to short!have you tried the bolt on it's own without the can does it go through then?.It should go all the way through and touch the frame work,if not your captive nut is toast .Not many options I'm afraid only thing I can think of is either.
1.put a bolt through and do it up as tight as possible then cut the head off with a hacksaw leaving a threaded stud so you can still mount the can and then use a washer and locknut.
2.Beacuse the nut is welded on the inside of that silly little bracket
that you can't get to,drill it out and have a new nut welded on.
3.Buy a new subframe
Like I said not many options as you have to use that mounting point, anyone else think of something:( .Andy

Andy, thanks for the swift reply. I took the can off and tried the (original) bolt in the thread but with no luck. I wondered about cleaning up the thread or, possibly using a narrower bolt with a sleeve and a new, square, not to fit in the space behind the existing captive nut.

Well fed up as it is not as if I can ride it anywhere.

Was just about to suggest this. Can't do any harm, if you're lucky the tap may catch on the original thread? Don't forget to lubricate the tap with a squirt of light grease/WD40 or similar.

I've only just bought my 1150GS & am not that familiar with it yet. If the mounting hole is not a blind hole, run the tap through from the other side.

Thanks everybody.

Para, I know exactly what I am doing now.

Tool box, right, first draw - no that's just spanners and stuff. Third draw, electrical. Multimeter? No, ah there it is -' Space Time Continuum Distorter', right, set it for Saturday afternoon - and while I am here I'll do the lottery again.

Also Para, re your snorkel? I have a special hacksaw blade for cutting through Carbon Fibre. £45, or, if you have the 3, seeing as its you, I will knock off the postage. I know its the right one as I have checked the serial code, JUN. 10.R

I plan to try the tap route at the weekend and will let you know. If I fail, I will be the very loud one at future events....
Regards & thanks again

Just to close the story, the tap solution worked and then I took Para's advice and loosened everything up before fitting. It all worked.

The rode it down the street - without helmet - hear how it sounded. Jolly useful that I did as I was able to hear the bollocking I got from the police man who turned into our road just as I got there that much clearer. So that's all right then.

Para, did you cut the carbon?
