And how do you stop this bl***y self cancelling?

Birdseye, you have got to the heart of the matter for me! I've got used to the set-up (5 months of focus, horn-parping and 'Sorrreeee'). However, the cancellation happens to soon on the motorway unless you keep'em guessing and indicate late.

Someone, somewhere, among the technically superior members of the forum, must have found a way!:nenau

I'd love to know, if it's possible!

Every time I visit my dealer I make a point of mentioning my hatred of the self cancelling indicators :D Maybe eventually BMW will get the message and issue a software update! Everyone hassle your dealer about it :D

Switches

Its a little bit like squirting water on the car window to turn left but you do get used to it !

I was worried about the switchgear as all the magazines moan about the BMW indicators but it only took me about 30mins to get used to it.

Can never find the horn in time though and covering it while passing a junction always seems like a stretch. It's too far away.

Indicators :thumb
Horn :(

Just road-tested an R1200ST tonight. Try the same switchgear with clip-ons!It makes the GS version seem good by comparison

I went out for a ride on my VFR last week and kept hitting the right light switch to cancel the indicators! The indicator switch also felt flimsy in comparison and I found myself constantly checking to make sure they were switched on! The BWM ones do seem illogical at first but once got used to become second nature.

The beemer set-up pisses me off, frankly... Why have three buttons, when one will do? So much for German efficiency! I have got used to it, but when I jump on my Honda for the ride to work, I will often hit the horn or the starter in the first five mins of riding after a week-end on the GS :spitfire . What bugs me most is that the horn is not that easy to use IMO. If I need the horn, its often to avert a problem, so I don't want to be thinking where it is, but my thumb seems to go for the indicator rather than the tucked-up-there horn button...

I think they are fine as there is logic to the system. Just because all the other manufacturers use the cheap single switch doesn't meant they are all right about it.
If 10 people jump in a fire would you??? :D YMMV just my 0.02 cts

there is logic to the system
Oh no there isn't! :D What logic is there to not being able to cancel you flasher after you have turned and are twisting the throttle to accelerate. Twisting the throttle means your thumb is in a bad position to press the cancel button. As for trying to give a friendly beep by pushing upwards with your left thumb. Never happen. Always comes out as a "get out of my" honk.
Best bet is to swap the switches around. Horn/left & cancel/right.
I've done it and I now find it intuitive :thumb

Yup - this is shockingly poor ergonomics. Great use, a stiff flash of the NS indicator in a spot of bother.

As I am also the owner of a jap bike, I can tell you what I think of BMWs switch gear - it is absolutely***###!! Just in case you dont understand this word, you cant get any worse!!
Every time I ride my jap bike, I end up pressing the horn for left and the start button for right!!

If you want to flash someone or pip the horn on the BMW, you end up feeling for the buttons, only to find they are not where you think they are. Then you end up looking for them, taking your eyes off the road for a split second. Dangerous or what??
Even when you get used to the indicators, you need ET style fingers for the basics such as turning the lights on.
As for the kill switch- - - - - - -!!!

. . .mebbe the designer thought - 'I know wot to do, have the left hand deal with turnin' left & the right hand deal with turnin' right, dat's sensible now' Wonder if he ever rode a bike?

Hmmm....seriously worried about the number of people who seem to lack the basic physical coordination to operate something so simple

Are you sure you're safe on the road? Does Mummy have to come round to do up your shoelaces still??

BMW - get me proper switch gear! I want to ride my bike, not feel like a touch-type-beginner! :shoot:
Buy one of the BMW F650's; they have switces like most Jap bikes, if that is what you want! :)

And I have a question too:
-Do you have any idèa why the F's got the switches the Jap way, and the R's and K's is the special BMW way?

:) Liv.

Let's face it, it's a sh*te system. BMW too arrogant to admit it, most of us too gulllible to admit it.
