Firstly, make a note of the size requirements for the avatar (such as 80x80).

Then, right click on the desired picture.
You should see an option 'resize picture'.
Click on that, then find 'custom' in the size options.
Put in the recommended sizes.
Voila !!

Note that you may need a few goes to get just the right size.
Also, some animated ones don`t seem to work if they go too small.

Hope this helps.

Thanks....but..

Thanks Tarka,

But this just seems to crop the picture cutting out most of the content. I was hoping to just make the picture a miniture version :nenau

You can use the same method to resize an avatar as you do to resize any other photo. If you look at the Photo Posting FAQ you will see that the first part covers resizing using Irfanview.

You can use the same method for your avatar just set the biggest dimension (width or height) to 110 pixels... total dimensions must be no more than 110 x 110.
Make sure the Preserve Aspect Ratio box is ticked.
This will work for a standard, non-moving avatar.

If you want to edit an animated gif (a moving avatar) it's a different story.
In that case you could try Gifworks . If you get stuck I can give you guidance on using it, but if the original animated gif is too large it can be problematic reducing the file size to fit within the 19.5kb limit on this site.
