I was doing an oil change this morning on a mates GSPD.I took the sump off to replace a leaking gasket and found a piece of steel pin in the bottom of the sump.I thought it could be a needle roller, but it has a sort of dent in it,i thought it could be some sort of locating dowel, but can`t understand where it could come from in the bottom end of the engine, any suggestions gratefully received.:nenau

Could be the dreaded pin holding the main bearing in place. If missing it could allow the bearing to rotate blocking off the oil hole. Not good. The size of this pin is 4 x 1o mm, is that like yours?

Like double dejavu Scooby!!!

I found the same pin in the sump of my R65 project bike yesterday. Along with some other bits. I'll try to post a pic later.

Here's what I found in my sump. The pin is the magical 10mmx 4mm one. Dunno what the white plug is & the spring looks familiar but can't quite place it. Maybe it is the cutout from the helicoil type stud repair?

I can't tell from the diagram where the pin actually fits.

Quite correct- it was me, and it was the bearing
retainer pin!
I have sent John a PM to pass on my findings, and Steve Scriminger
sorted me out. Not a rare occurrence apparently
as it seemed that the pins were not correctly
peened over at the BMW factory.
I was lucky and suffered no major damage
and it was fixed without having to remove the engine.
