Hello all,
I performed a mid point service (3000Miles) oil change today. Sadly, the sump guard was not in the mood for playing. Two of the nuts holding it were locked on too tight. Try as I might (with plenty of TLC) I could not get them off without breaking the thread (mid way) coming from the engine block. I am now left with no sump guard.
Should I order the parts from BMW or should I moan to my local dealer and get them to do it under waranty?
Surly this should not happen with a new bike?
All advise is badly needed.
Many thanks.

What a bummer. :(

You're right, this should not happen on a new bike. I reckon you have a good case for a warranty claim.

An unsympathetic dealer might try to fob you off with "well you should have all servicing work done by our factory trained technicians sir". If you were tightening the nut not undoing it then maybe, but undoing a simple nut?

Sounds to me like there was a manufacturing defect with the nut or stud. Either they have corroded and fused together (materials not fit for purpose), or the factory have used a thread-locking compound that is too strong (adhesive not fit for purpose), or they were cross-threaded on assembly (manufacturing defect).

Warming up a stuborn nut with a paint-stripper gun sometimes helps if WD40 isn't doing the trick, but I'd have to be pretty desperate before risking the obvious damage to paint/plastics on the bike.

I think the threaded studs with built-in rubber washers can be unscrewed from the engine, so just replacing these should fix the problem. If I remember rightly, some crash-bars mount to these studs, and the studs can snap if you drop the bike heavily. Make sure your dealer doesn't think you need new studs because you've had a prang!

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

These are a weak point on the mounting system for the sump guard. If you have knocked the sumpguard a bit then what you explained happened, can happen. That would then be your fault!

However I would assume that there was no crash and that they were just too tight. That would in my opinion be the manufacturers fault!

Mick.

Thanks for the info guys.

Mick,
The sump guard has never taken a knock, so I think this one has to be down to the dealer.
I will let you know how I get on.
Cheers

I rang the dealer this morning and they were ok about it. They said they had not had a case of this happening before, but would be pleased to do it under warranty.
Lets hope all goes well.
