I seem to have a problem with my sump guard...the rubber mounts seem to cut every now and then, and it feels I am paying more for rubber mounts than servicing the rest of the bike!
A few days ago, while speed blasting in the highway I had the sump guard front rubber mount cut again! which gave me also a slight heart attack when I heard at around 180Km's the dreaded metallic sound of the sump scraping the tarmac (and lucky me it didn't get off to cause an accident).
So is anyone else experiencing this issue? it's the 3rd time the sump get loose (cut rubber mounts), and if yes, is there a solution to have it secured? and drop the sump guard stress attack :D :eek:

By "cut" I assume you mean "tear" or "fail" ??

I had two R1100GS for over ten years and never had one of the rubbers fail.

It seems you may either be riding in circumstances where you regularly "ground" the bike out on the bash plate (sump guard) or perhaps are overtightening the fasteners after replacement following oil/filter changes.

If you`re not off roading at all,and it`s some other cause...even extreme heat..then just leave the thing off.

Might be overtightening, bash plate has hit the ground a few times (few off roads and a few obstacles taken over, but that's really rare), I was a bit confused, at the highway on speed I had a few high frequency vibrations and thought that might be the cause (rubber mountings where both cut in the middle, leaving the screw inside the engine, PS small tip, take a small dremel and make a small cut to remove the screws).
I would remove entirely the sump guard but since I do occasionally cross gravel roads I would prefer to keep it (needs replacement...since it now has a huge hole in the front).
Old plate had also the front metal spacer broken and I was installing the plate with it loose (just to keep the space with the engine) so I believe that might also be a reason for vibrations destroying the rubber mounts.

this statement tells me you're missing.. or rather, overstating the purpose of the sump guard. Just think about it.. think about why it has these rubber bung 'shock absorbers' - nothing to do with any risk from gravel. more about the chance of the sump hitting large rock. ie.. the sump 'falling' as it were onto a rock.. while negotiating a boulder strewn uneven surface.

Oh I was referring to the case of damaging the engine (in the case I remove the sump guard).

Splitting is the case...
Thanks going to be more carefull when tightening next time :)

Use some copperslip or similar on the threads as well. As they get all the wet etc thrown up they seize easily. I have left mine off as per R and RS series as I am 95% road.

Check the sump guard is not bent, if bent you preload the one rubber putting other one in tension, this causes early failure, I battered mine flat, then shimmed it with washers to get it to sit evenly.
