A general question.....

Would a fibre sump plug washer be just as effective as an ally/copper washer?

Reason I ask is I've done an oil/filter change on the GTR and the washer that was fitted has an 11mm hole but is quite wide... been to two different motor spare places and neither have one.... but I have fibre washers exactly the right size .

Got a full box of copper washers but none as 'wide' as the one that came off it .

fibre washers tear open when you tighten the sump plug due to the turning combined with pressure so will not do job, they rely on even downward pressure in a confined area.

Thanks for the reply.. Why can you buy specific fibre sump plugs if they do that ?

dunno bryn maybe if they sat in a recess they would work, on a different note gave up on the address/innova plan and brought a vanvan 1000 miles this month 180 rear tyre laughs at potholes!!!and must say chain lube as come on in the 7 years, would now consider chain driven bike to replace GS something like a ktm990smt/new v-strom 1000.

Always liked the look of Vanvans

Wot if
you put the fibre washer under the metal one?
The fibre would seal /the metal prevent splitting by twisting*.

*probably/maybe/perhaps. :hide

Maybe too thick for the amount of thread?

Well if the reason the metal washer is no longer effective is because it's flattened and spread and so, thinner - perhaps not. :nenau

p.s;
in the past i've effectively reused (o.k then - bodged :P ) a metal sump washer by giving it a few turns of PTFE tape over it.

if the old washer was copper, anneal it and reuse.

if it was ally, reuse with threadloc.

now this is my kind of banter, if only we we knew what we were doing were the fuck are brunell, mitchell, harwkins, wallis and dibbnah when you need them ? dead ,oh we are fucked, byrn park it up and walk suspect you need the execise anyway.vanvan 4 ever reusable sump plug washer it's the future!!!

i was going to add: "if you are desperate" to my post, but there was never an Edit button for some reason :eek

I've already re-fitted the sump plug and filled up with fresh oil, using a new copper washer, but the new washer is not as 'wide' as the sump plug bolt, so is contacting on only about 70% of the surface of the sump bolt flat surface ... whether that's sufficient is what bothers me....

Meanwhile not that desperate.. ordered a new sump bolt/washer set from ebay ( which I should have done in the first place )

I could well do with the exercise... another 8 stone and I'll be average tosser size :thumb

Why not just do the obvious.

Go for a short run then park bike up

Put paper under the bike and look for oil leak.

If no oil leak then ok

If oil leak then replace.

None leaked overnight.. will ride to work on it tomorrow :thumb

Oh god!,thread lock, ptfe tap!:-!,both have nothing to do with why the washer is there,i'm not even going to start on that one and we all moan about service charges, poor Mech gets lumbered with trying to get a sump plug out thats had either of the above used on it,I give up.:blast:D:D:jager

do tell why removal of a thread locked sump plug would be an issue? i've never had a problem :nenau

this whole thread is based on the fact that the OP didn't have the correct washer and i suggested something that could be done "if you are desperate". :blast

Don't bother with the washer at all!!

not the best - but i did an oil change and didn't 'find' the washer until i was recycling the oil :blast:blast by which time it was too late because the nice new oil was in and circulating nicely :blagblah:blagblah

No leaks as yet. and no- i didn't cram it up as if there was no tomorrow

(washer is now ty rapped to the oil container ready for the next change :D )

A ship spoilt for a ha'porth of tar Bryn??

Ally crush washers are 35 pence each plus vat from the dealers.

If it ain't leaking now, remember to buy one before your next oil change is due ( or maybe buy a few ??).
