I am looking for a 1150 and have read that the earlier (pre twin plug) were prone to low speed surging/ lumpiness of the engine that was cured by the 2 plugs. Is this the case or do removal of cat etc solve the problem.

In looking for a 1150 should i exclude single plug bikes?

I'll be gentle ...

... but the Search function is your friend :augie Type in Surging and sit back with a bottle of red, a pad & pencil 'cos there's lots to read.

A quick response might be:

1) Don't disregard single spark bikes
2) Surging has a number of causes
3) Surging has a number of solutions

... and welcome to UKGSer :thumb2

It depends.
And to muddy the water, do you want ABS brakes?
End 02(ish) the ABS system became (for me) too clever for its own good.

I would worry more about this than surging.
Surging can be tuned-out.

Single plug back on the menu then. I do want ABS as my commute will be on 30 miles muddy, sh**y lanes and roads and i feel the ABS will give me some security. If there are 2 types of ABS which is the more reliable/ easier to use?

Again the search function is your friend.

But basically the twin sparks have an electric servo to assist them. If you've ever had a bulb blow you know not to trust electrics ;)

I've had 3 1150's.

Single spark with ABS
Single spark no ABS
Twin spark with servo ABS

In my opinion the best alround braking system was the ABS only model.

The servo/ABS is very powerful and reassuring although does lack a bit of feel but more importantly the servo can fail, leaving you with virtually no brakes. For that reason I've removed the Servo/ABS unit from my current bike.

Non of the bikes really has a problem with surging, it's possible that was down to doing all my own servicing very regulary. Which includes balancing your throttles at around 4000rpm, valve clearances, rocker end float and ensuring your TPS voltage is correct...ie not the same as leaving the factory, I think 371mv is about right.

Ensuring TPS voltage is correct???
How do I check/adjust this?
