Surging at low revs

HMM traded up from my 04 gs to a water boxer early this year and have noticed that at low revs the bike surges just a little bit but its a bit annoying to say the least when you are sat in traffic. It only happens under load, when I pull the clutch in and free wheel all is fine??
Any ideas guys as I had it in for a service and it doesn't seem to be much better, just wondered if anyone had similar issues?

Mines a 06/2014 and I had similar probs when trying to hold it steady at small throttle openings. I think it is partly due to over sensitive to minute throttle movements and not very good fuelling. Maybe fly by wire and huge pistons combo.
A friend told me that when he put a full system on his '09 gs it made it a lot smoother so I thought I would give it a go.
For me it has transformed the bike. I am not bothered if it makes more power or torque as there is enough anyway but it is how it makes it, now it is so much smoother and easy to control right through the rev range. The same friend who now has a 2013 gs rode mine and said it is much more tractable, he was always changing gear to keep it spinning above 3000rpm to keep it smooth. He ordered Akrapovic headers within two days of riding my bike.
Ok it's an expensive fix but for me it was worth it as the bike was starting to piss me off and as a bonus I love the noise and yes up the top end it really flies.

My 2013 GS used to do this, perhaps they all do, but I just changed down to increase revs. It had disappeared by the time I got over 10k mls on the bike.

My friends Gs has done 22,000 and it is still rough, I rode it and compared to mine it is awful.

I put mine down to over sensitive throttle movements as on cruise control it's not noticeable, I also swopped to 'Road' mode, also it's got better with milage, runs sweet at 1500 rpm in second or third now, & it's a consequence of having the light flywheel which I do quite like..

Weak mixture coupled with lambda sensors running two cylinders in standard trim. Emission conscious and what's known in the trade as 'light load hesitation' common on a lot of new vehicles and some old ones for that matter. Don't know whether Power Commander do a mod for these models but that should iron it out along with your bank balance. Honda had a massive problem with their PGMFI systems, bikes as well as cars. My new LC ticks over like a bag o crap and yes a real pain in the ass travelling at low revs The age we live in, oh for those side draft twin 40 Webers!!!!

While I agree generally with your excellent post, on my bike the cruise control virtually eliminated the problem thereby thinking it was the sensitivity of the throttle mode.. Also I recall an ECU upgrade when it was in the dealers early February that took the urgency out of the throttle.. BMWs move to the heavier flywheel will assist momentum & surge at lower engine speeds, so hopefully the newer bikes will be smoother..
Regards...

Did they check the timing? Some bikes come from the factory slightly misadjusted, and that can cause it to run a bit rough. Its not due to be checked until 12k miles, but worth doing it early if yours is not smooth.

Cheers guys for all the info will try it in road mode as I usually leave it in dynamic, will look to upgrade the exhaust at some point (well you do have to fiddle). It has never been apparent on long runs but I have been using the bike for journeys to work and in traffic it was noticeable. Bike hasn't done 10k yet (I do have other bikes a car and a van (yes too many toys) but I wanted to check that I didn't have an issue before the warranty runs out in April... (may even pay for extra warranty as an £11k bike is a very expensive toy http://www.ukgser.com/forums/images/smilies/eek.gif. Still I have the rally seat fitted a taller screen and givi aluminium boxes so have already been adding bits...

Thanks again guys

I had a software update put in when I had my TKC70s fitted and its almost a different bike now. Before mine surged badly at 3500-4500rpm in all modes (to varying degrees), even on Cruise Control. Now its near perfect and seems smoother on low rev pull-aways.

Scutty, which dealership did this, as my GSA does it badly now and although its been back to Bahnstormers several times they say they can do nothing, its worse with my aftermarket can on but even with the standard can it does it, they say as it runs so lean there is nothing that can be done.

Hi

I got this done at Vines in Guildford. I mentioned the surging when i booked it in but the software upgrade came hen they plugged it in.

Still having issues in all modes so I think a trip to the dealer (Williams Manchester) is in order, I will ask for checks on timing and ECU remap to see if that helps. I am also going to try some higher octane fuel to see if that helps as it seems to be getting worse rather than better. I guess it is the emissions side of things but want it sorted before the warranty runs out next year...
There was a guy remapping he old GS does anyone know if he has got round to mapping any WC bikes?
Have to agree with Mechman gone are the days of side draft weber 40s on my Mk 2 escort I could get down to 8MPG when 'enjoying' it...and it ran sweet all the time...memories.LOl
