Traded in my 1150 Adv today for a 1200 GS.

Previous owner had performance headers straight into Remus - no cat.

Had been sitting waiting, key in, ignition on, key out...then finally started it...went to pull away from SPC and it sounded awful...

Opened it up 4th 5th 6th, about 5500rpm and it was surging like hell...steady throttle, 5500 rpm on sweeping bend, and she was all over the place. Let the Pukmeister and Rowbo have a go, and they agreed...it wasnt good, and put it down to the exhaust system/fuel mapping.

When they had a go, the bike had been left running....i eventually stopped for a brew, called SPC, and decided to go back up and collect an original exhaust system...but after the bike had been shut down and flashed back up again...the surging is gone, and she pulls like a train going through 5500-6500rpm.

Has anyone else come across this? Did i need to open the trottle fully a few times with ignition on? Or was it just that it needed a good old blow through, followed by a shut down of the onboard computer?

Apart from that, it rocks!!

Not something I've ever come across on an injected bike. Surging, yes. Intermittant surging, no. (I know, bad wording, mia culpa).

Let us know what turns up, and I'll hawk a greener off the Rock when I'm home at the weekend on your behalf :thumb

will be hawking one there myself in august...me and girlfriend off for a blast round the south and up to see folks in the north.

spoke to dean at spc, he says to keep and eye on it, and let him know if it does it again...been up and down the A32 twice this evening trying to induce it, but it just pulled like a train....not even a hint of surging...but earlier, i couldnt even overtake...it just bogged down around the 5500-6500 mark, and went like a kangaroo..strange, i know..

did the very same on the adv, and narrowed that down to worn air intake butterfly valve...and the coil packs were breaking down...so only firing on 1 saprk plug...again, only noticable under hard acceleration, or when going uphill/carrying lotsa luggage.

On my first twinspark, so hadn't thought of that. I'll keep it in mind if mine ever goes pffft :thumb

You have to switch the beastie on and let it run through it's checky shenanigans else it (the management system) selects the last set of data and starts accordingly..

I could't get mine to start in the garage as I had a fan heater pointing toward the air intakes.
Pooter said it was hot. Engine was stone cold......

The problem you mentioned, I had on my 1150 ADV when I put the original exhaust and cat back on after a having a Remus and y piece on. Done this cause I was sellin her. she ran like a dog on the way back up to the dealers. I think the system was havin a problem resetting itself, after the remus and y piece. But the dealer sorted it, before it was sold on. It was a twin spark. I can enquire, as the local Beemer mechanic is the best in the business. It was just like the problem with the throttle bodies lifting out of their seats, when you take the tank off....I don't believe its a major

If the battery has been disconnected, then the advice is to open and close the throttle fully twice (with the ignition on but engine not running) so the system can remap itself - this sounds like bullsh*t & probably is. Bit that's what I've been told. I wonder if this was the problem; it would explain why it fixed itself.

No I believe that it's correct :thumb

will give you a shout for mcnultys sar!!! will be getting some more of me tatt done...local tattoo artist, neal from "art of damage"...went to school with...he'll have me on the slab for another 20 hrs...so will be doing lots of fish and chips...and some of the dark stuff form Frank Owen's...

on the throttle body issue...some american member posted it originally...he said that if you can catch it before your warranty runs out, it'll get sorted...but he reckons us brits wont have done the mileage that brought it on...was about 20000 when it came on, and well within warranty, so was covered.... i think the reason for it is that the spindles arnt lubed from build...but as i say, that is heresay, but very feasable.

as for the surging...my girlfriend left her dakar in the garage and came on the back with me this evening...she reckons that the surging seems to be gone as she gave me a dig in the ribs as the gs hit *20

so all seems sorted...i believe the opening and closing of the throttle gave the tps a chance to sort itself out
