I have also given her my old Sony Surround System with these connections on the back

Speaker connections are not shown on the back of this unit but they are on the left.

How the bloody hell do i wire this up so that she can get the full surround sound...My minds gone a blank!!:nenau:nenau

Step by step instructions would be great

DVD player OUT left and right into the SONY left and right INPUT

the SONY turns stereo into fake surround

For the surround sound (dvd player?) to tv use a component cable (yellow) for picture. If you want to put the sound through the tv the best option is an optical cable.

If the source of the 5.1 sound and picture is the HD recorder, then use optical from the HD recorder to the Sony amp and scart from the HD recorder to the tv for picture (it will also deliver stereo sound to the tv).

Sony used to have a website that you could add the model numbers to and it would tell you how to connect it all.

If the TV recorder is High Definition, then use a HDMI link from that to the TV.

But it doesn't look like you have any source of 5.1 sound. My old Sony unit would NOT upscale stereo sound to surround sound.

If you have any source of 5.1 then use a TOS link (optical) from the source into the Sony.

OK it's becomming clearer.

If you play a DVD through the Sony DVD player, you will get surround sound.

If you use the TOS(SER) link from the TV to the DVD player you might get some surround sound upscaling.

If you want TRUE surround sound from the TV, you need a 5.1 TV source such as a Sky or Freesat HD box. If you have this, then plug the TOS link between the HD box and the DVD player.

I have the same SONY system (it's in the for sale bit).

Don't spend a fortune, as you're only wiring up an old TV or DVD player. Neither of which have surround sound. (On your first picture, the TV signal looks like it's coming from a roof aerial?)

Couple of quid for Tesco value audio leads, nothing fancy. it's only wire. your Mum is likely just want to turn it on an listen to the sound through the speakers.

Plug the DVD into the SONY.. and then at least you can tell her she can put her Carpenters CD into the DVD player and listen to the music. If she's watching a film it, will sound suuupper!!!

TV will be normal (unless you plug that in with the audio leads)

plug it in as I've said in earlier post.

The S550 sends the sound out of the 5 speakers and the bass. It'll sound great anyway. She'll be chuffed with it.

:)
