Unless of course, you happen to be a journalist who earns his/her living from writing - when people doing it for free takes away their livlihood and also reduces the work available and ricves even proper, paid work rates down.

I suppose you do whatever you do for a living for free too.....

That a publisher wants to obtain information so as to be able to turn a profit from the results - that isn't doing it for free. Publishers do things for one reason only - to make money. This is a way of providing information to sell magazines. Nothing more.

I like the chap who asked how much per pic? NUJ rates? You must be joking!

Thankfully I have some regular work and don't need odd freelance sales to try and make ends meet.

Hi again

Many thanks to everyone who's filled out the survey and sent photos. The response to the survey has been one of the biggest ever.

We're still quite short of photos so if anyone has any they're happy for us to use, could you email them please.

Re the 'commercial' debate, this generally happens to some extent every month. We will mention this website (it got a very positive mention in the 1200GS article as did someone on here's GS shop), someone will get a decent helmet and quite a lot of people are happy to share their knowledge and see themselves in a magazine. Not everyone though I realise and I'm sorry if anyone feels we're being unfair in any way.

edit - I've just been looking through the photos we've received so far and there's some absolutely brilliant ones. Thanks again to everyone.

My original response wasn't meant to be negative or hostile, so if it was taken that way then I apologise. I was just trying to make a point, that in the commercial world you have to pay.

We take the time to be part of this community and many of us pay for the privilege. Magazines get many things for free such as bikes that they don't ride very far, farkles that are added to bikes, and they take money for writing about this (i.e. we buy the mags). They could give something back to the communities to help pay for the information they are soliciting. Yes a shiny new Shark is a good prize. but benefits one person, membership buys you unlimited questions, and many responses, and benefits everyone.

So to quote Decster:

don't be sorry, Subscribe!

...it's the least you can do! £12.00
