Suspect Bevel failiure.

Hi, I serviced the bike and changed bevel box oil, only to find fine silver flakes in the oil and on the plug, I want to have a look at the bearing before I order the parts and see whats failing.
My question is can I take off the bevel cover and have a look then reassemble, so I can carry on using if it looks ok, without any problems?
The reason I ask is because i cannot feel the rumble, there is no sign of oil leaking and obviously don't know the source of the silver flakes.
I've read the roadside repair (Steptoe) and also the BMW manual, does the home workshop procedure for changing the crown wheel bearing have any differences from the roadside repair? as it seems a straight forward swap.
 
Just before i went to morocco at the beginning of the month, i drained the F/D oil. The colour was fine, but there was just a little too much sludge on the drain plug. Not a lot, but just a tiny bit more than i normally see.

So removed the F/D cover. And one rivett pin was missing from the bearing cage.
There was no play,movement or roughness (But that doesn't mean much, as i've had bearings on the point of disintergrating that had no play or roughness).

I changed my bearing as i was riding through france and spain and going around morocco. But i wouldn't have bothered checking it if i wasn't going anywhere.

Take the cover off - the crown wheel with the bearing attached, will come off with the cover. You only need check it from one side, visually and feel. If it's all ok, just reverse the procedure and put it all back.

In theory it is a straightforward bearing change but in practice you will probably find a bearing tight on the shaft.
I had to use a vice and a big puller with ground down legs to remove it.
You may also find that you need time and tools to split the case remove the shaft through the seal.
You would have to be pretty desperate to try to do a roadside repair.
Just hope that the particles problem is the bearing and not the gears.

Thats the idea of showing how to do it at the roadside :nenau For emergencies, stuck in the outback etc etc . I always carry a spare bearing and seal when on a long trip. :thumb
 
This bearing is also used in the newer moto guzzi's (V11 at least). so if you get stuckon a tour and cant find a BMW dealer you could always try a Guzzi dealer:thumb but I think the Guzzi seal is a bit different.
 
I've also found the cheapest place to get the bearing is BMW main dealers . :thumb2

No problems with the guide you wrote.Clear instructions,good pics and waffle free.Have referred to it myself.
The reason for the "desperate" comment was in response to the original posters comment that the job "seems a straightforward swap".
Could i pick your brains on this one....
I changed my bearing a couple of months ago.It was not easy.
It was the first bearing swap for the bike(Y2000,55k on clock).
After the first change,does any subsequent change of bearing become easier.Tolerances looser etc.

Thanks for all the reply's most helpfull, I'm nipping into the garage now to have a peek I may be gone some time!
I've got a good puller set at work so that should be ok, I noticed about measuring to calculate the shim thickness as I don't have the special guide for measuring is there a proven method for measuring that works I have vernier callipers or will the original shim be fine just concerned as it's failed a 20k although it seems this is not uncommon.

having done this myself i did not need a big puller all i did was warmed the bearing and levered it off to replace it all i did was warmed and it dropped on i used the same shims and everything is ok if you have silver flakes CHANGE THE BEARING it takes a little time for a lot of peace of mind

I've pulled it apart and can't see anything wrong, cage is good as does the bearing surfaces, I'm going to see how much a bearing is tomorrow and as you say 'peace of mind' I may swap it. Last thing I want is for it to fail whilst 2-up touring.
 
to 'feel' the bearing wash it off with turps so it is metal to metal and feel/listen to the noise if it sounds rough if you have small silver metal flakes then change it pleaaaaaasssssssseeeeeeeeee! :rob :bounce1
 
Was passing our local branch of BSL today £89 for the bearing BMW dealer here I come.

Same down here in RSA, I am in Engineering, could get the bearing, but not in the C3 fit that you need and it was more expensive than BMW.

The cheapest i found the bearing at a bearing supplier was £69.
BWM charge about £30.I guess they have made one hell of a bulk buy to get down to that price.Did they know something?.

Bike was at the dealer last Thursday for some work I didn't have time to sort out & they mentioned the back wheel was 'noisy'. Lots of muttering and shaking of heads left me feeling a bit concerned as I'm off to Holland next week. So it was out with the tools on Friday night to find that the bearing had lost a pin and it was on its way out. Got the new bearing (and seal) from BMW and fitted it today. Removing the old bearing was a bit of a pain but off it came after a bit of heat and the use of a shiny bearing puller. The new one warmed up in the oven and went on fine. All put back together and the noise has gone.
