Hi all,

looking at at a used GSA Rallye TE, but the only thing that is putting me off is that it has a 'suspension lowering kit' fitted. Now I am not short in the leg so it is not something I would buy or add from new, so wonder if anyone can enlighten me as to the difference from a standard GSA Rallye, and as it is advertised as a kit, is it something that can be altered back to standard set up. Thanks in advance.

oops, should have said, its a 1200 if it makes any difference

I wouldn't bother as the costs are probably not worth it.

Assuming it has ESA, I believe you'll need a new rear shock/spring assembly that's coded to the bike, side and main stands and probably a seat too.

Factor in the costs and you'll save money by buying a standard height bike.

A lowered bike is still a very decent ride. Compared to the standard height bike, the maximum angle for when turninerg is slightly less, but still acceptable unless you intend to race the bike.

If you like the bike and the testride was acceptable I wouldn't worry about the lowering. It is still a very capable bike

Edit: The difference is 2 cm shorter spring travel. This also lowers the cg, so some people find it easier to handle a lowered at low speed. The lowered bike also come with the low seat, thus the knee angle may be more cramped. But a new seat will restore the riding position. In fact, for someone with long legs, installing a tall seat on a lowered bike will improve the riding comfort above standard. Restoring the bike to full height is too expensive

is it a "kit" or is it a BMW factory low bike? If a kit can the original owner supply the original parts? I have a lowered 1250GS and have not found any issues with ground clearance and obviously comfort is defined by seat/pegs/bar relationship not suspension height.

I presume it is a factory fit - see wording on advert

'Equipment
ABS Pro, Anti-Theft alarm system, Daytime Riding Light, DTC, Gear Shift Assistant Pro, Keyless Ride, Suspension Lowering Kit.'

Low Ralleye will be very close to normal GS size.

I would ask the seller the question.
I assume that it is a non BMW dealer selling, BMW do not describe a low chassis bike as having a lowering kit fitted.
If it is a private sale and they don't know, walk away
If it is a factory lowered bike, buy it if it fits.
If it is an after market 'kit' walk away as there is hardly a lack of s/hand bikes out there.

To the OP

If you have factor lowered, i'm guessing you have a later LC

You need to go back to the begining with the Hex head ( model before the LC)

The bike came in 2 varient GS & GSA - & 2 seat heights and sub heights

It was for want of a word,

Factory std - with a stock seat height, It gave you a bike with around 850mm seat height

Now this is where it gest interesting

The bike came with a std seat which offered 2 adjustable height positions

So the GS

Factory std - std seat high 850mm
Factory std - std seat Low 830mm

Factory std - Low seat 810mm

The GSA -
Factory std - Std seat high 880mm
Factory std - Std seat low 850mm

Factory std -Low seat 820mm

S0 now lowering from the factory

If you wanted to go lower, it was usually a wilbers or hyperpro or Ohlins loweing kit

30mm lowered front & rear suspension

So the lowerd model now sat at 790mm with the low seat - Ad 30mm per seat/ setting if you want different heights

However this came with a catch

You needed to lower the centre & side stands by 30mm also, you dont need to, but trust me ;) 30mm

Move foreward to the LC

This came in a factory low option

However, at a price and caveat

The lowering is done via the suspension (ESA) so to get factory low heights , you have the ESA on single rider soft and it gives you a new seat height of

810mm* note the astrisk ;)

So This bike came in 4 varients

2 GS
2GSA

The options apply to both so one is not different to the other

3 seat heights all with 2 further seat height adjustments

2 differnt comfort levels comfort, normal

So you get

Low seat / comfort / normal (high/low adjustment on the seat)
Std seat / comfort / normal (high/low adjustment on the seat)
High seat / comfort / normal (high/low adjustment on the seat)

The idea being that you get a multitude of seat heights ( you do and dont;)

Now the factory lowering bit

the low bike comes with ESA suspension 30mm lower than the std bike

A lowered centre & side stand

However - remember the *

the bike is 60mm wider at the critical seat position

so the 30mm lowering is wiped out by the wider seat

So even with the ESA set to single rider / no luggage & soft, with a low seat 810mm it gives the equivalent seat height / arch of 830mm

so a short rider is on the tippytoes

to get back to 790 mm, you need a ultralow seat & bobbins that gets you to 800mm

So to answer your question

Yes it's a factory low

is it a problem - no

will you notice anything riding it

unless your riding so fast thet your on the edges of the tyres - no

off road , you have 30mm less ground clearance - do you measure what you can get over ??

With out getting shouty ;)

Forget what you think, ride the bike and enjoy it

if the ""height"" thing affects you that much get a high seat and whack the ESA to high

Thats exactly what they do

https://approvedused.bmw-motorrad.co.uk/UK/detail.cshtml?on=436034

If this is THE bike, the ad seems to be from an approved dealer.
Their listing of equipment do mention the Seat Height Reduction, which is the BMW wording. The text summary is probably written by a sales representative, and he/she has used the lay mans phrase 'Lowering kit'. I wouldn't worry about it.

If you are otherwise happy with the bike and want it, I see no reason that you shouldn't go for it.

It's a factory low, you can tell by the rear suspension and stands

I have a 2016 gsa standard height and looking to lower it. If all the bits (shocks and stands) could be swapped i would be interested in exchanging all the components. Just a thought.
Cheers Jon

Do you currently have ESA on the bike?

Yes i do.

Two options then

Replace with OEM lowered ESA units , Or go for aftermarket parts Wilburs ESA,( £1400+ Touratech ESA £2300+

you would need to see if they do low versions & pricing though

Alternatively speak to Denzo on here and see what he can do ( he's our resident suspension expert and rebuilds - repairs modifys suspension units )

probably a whole lot cheaper

Alternatively replace with non ESA units , and get a bypass plug to eliminate the warning light on the dash

Then you will need to change

Must - Side stand & centre stand Optional - seat if you want

Thanks for the info Santa. I have had a quote off Denz0 for a factory low rebuild, just need to save up some pennies.;):thumb
