I'm 22 and I made the mistake of buying an 1150 which costs too much to run and is overkill for my commuting needs. I've only got it 3rd party because that's all I can get pretty much and it's worrying, especially for trips aboad. I'm looking at downgrading to a 650. My bike cost 6k from a dealer and is on finance (2.5yr remaining). What's the best bet for converting...?

1. Try to swap for a 650 on here and work out the finance payoff then.
2. Go back to dealer and try to part-ex back for a 650 (and probably get ripped off)
3. Take out another loan to clear the BMW finance, sell it, buy 650.

1,I'm quite sure it's illegal to sell a bike if it has finance against it.
2, See what the dealer will offer you you can only try!
3, You will no doubt have to pay an excess for settling the finance early.

I'd say it's impossible to say without the figures.......

You need to go get a quote on a trade-in, and establish the price of a 650 that you might buy as well.....then you can compare the trade-in price against what you might get for your lebenfiddy....

Get a quote on that as well, then post here the specs on the big GS....we'll try and give you an idea of what it's worth or you could speculatively put it up on FS&W.........

Make sure you get figures for insurance costs and so on, then sit back with all the numbers and see how it adds up ;) :thumb

2002 GS, VGC 26k, worth 5.5k and I've got £500 of extras that I can sell privately.

1. I won't sell the bike with finance on it but if I found a 650 i'd be willing to take that in p/x and swapper pays off the extra.

I could take out one of these new 5.5 APR things to switch the finance over, Northern Rock if I remember with no early repayment fee, so that the bike is not linked to the finance. I then get the bike, use some of my savings and pay of the APR.

It's on BMW finance which has no early repayment stinger, other than the £50 purchase fee. APR on it works out about 6% in real-terms, not 3.4% the BMW dealers lie about.

Insurance is £180 on the 650, £340 on the 1150. TPO and cheapest from multiple insurers.

One doesn't downgrade to an F650 sir. :spitfire

Maybe downsize, but many consider it to be an upgrade to the 'fun' side of morotorcycling.

Check out the cost of insuring a 650 first. The 1150 was cheaper than my 650 Dakar. :eek
Admittedly I did change brokers and shopped around
With esure at the moment

I floated down from an 1150 to a 650 and my insurance dropped 30%. My fuel consumption went from 45 to 70 mpg. I avoid motorways so my average speed did`nt drop at all. I traded a three & a half year old 1150 for a new 650 and got a couple of hundred quid back. Overall a good deal.

Sadly Snoopy, you live in London - so I assume will get shafted on the insurance. I won't tell you what I pay for full comprehensive insurance for a 1150 Adventure otherwise you would be crying into your cornflakes, but then I live in the relatively low crime area of South West Wales. :thumb

Expensive bike + High crime area + Youngster = High insurance premiums. :(

My address on the insurance is Newcastle however as I'm only down here 'on business'.

The 650 is by far the cheapest insurance I've had on any bike other than the CG125. Currently, CG125 will be £125 a year, 650 is £183, SV650 is £242 and 1150 is £340 TPO.

Having 4k+ of finance to pay with no insurance is too risky. Today I've opted for a nothern-rock cover loan so I can sell the bike then cancel all finances. My heart is set on a 1.5k XR400 for some fun, and a cheap car for winter.

One very nice 1150 up for sale then!

I doubt if the 650 Dakar will be much cheaper to run. Tires are cheaper, and so is fuel consumption. You do have the chain on the other hand and a service at a dealers will cost you prob. more that on an 1150GS. On a 650 the head/valves are hard to get to compared to an 1150GS.

Your riding pleasure however might incrase very much though! I upgraded from an 1100GS to a 650 Dakar. Will never go back.

Last time I was in BMW Park Lane they were trying to clear about 9 f650's. It was just before Christmas though. I insured my 650 with ebike, Im 27, just got my licence, live in London... like long walks and rainy days in... (Shit! wrong forum)and fully comp was £260ish. I find it cheap to run and will use Slocombes in NW London when I need to, they know alot about BM's but don't have all the equipment.

About a year ago I was thinking of selling my 1150 and getting a Dakar 650.. reason being.....panic set in from servo brakes issues on this site! Oh, and I like it too!!
Anyway, I spoke to Simon at Prestige and one thing he said is servicing a 650 is steeper than an 1150...dunno why, maybe it's easier with the sticky out cylinders.....

Too late maybe
perhaps he has gone away from GS WORLD
""My heart is set on a 1.5k XR400 for some fun, and a cheap car for winter.""

Colt is right, a car and a smaller bike is the way I'm going. Then again if the 1150 performs in Morocco I might just keep it. ;)

Go for it.
Not that I'm biased and am selling my 2004 twin spark shortly (good home wanted) priced at what a dealer would give me PX

I swapped my 1150 for a 650, and found over all you do save money but not as much as perhaps expected.
The 650 valve clearances are very labour intensive. :spitfire
All being said and done last day trip out I deliberately stuck to the posted limits covered 181 miles and used 9 litres of petrol. :D

I did the same with a T595 Daytona when I lived in London, (insured it at the rentals house in deepest, darkest Wiltshire) lived in constant fear of it getting nicked and the insurance sharks not paying up. If you under 25 and want to ride a decent bike and live in London, is there anyone that can pay the premiums?
