Mornin'

Late July '04 the ferry gets to Gothenburg at 1700hrs.
I've had the bright idea of traveling north along the 45 right through the night and well into the next day, just so long as it's not raining.

Will I be able to find petrol stations open in the early hours of the morning along the way?

Thanks.

Russ.

In finland and sweden unmanned petrol stations are common. they are open 24/7 and sell using a credit, cash or debit card system. This was true 8 years ago in any case.

perhaps someone with more recent experience can confirm?

Maybe Finland, but in France

I was in France a couple of weeks ago.
Plenty of unmanned petrol pumps, but between the three of us, we didn't have a single card that the machines would accept.
Might be worth checking with the card issuer first?

Unmanned pumps in Sweden

Boxer,

There are plenty of unmanned pumps in sweden, that do accept credit and debit cards (Mastro), you will need your PIN as without it you won't get anything out of the pumps, you need to swipe the card then when asked enter your pin.

I think the same applies to France, well it did 2 years ago when I went north to south overnight

Not sure that you'll be able to use cards in these type of machines if they're the same as French ones. Over there they use 'chip and pin' cards. They've got the chip on them (same as mobile phone sim cards) and the pin is used to verify instead of a signature. In the UK we're switching over to these over the course of the next year, beginning this summer I beleive. Trouble is, they are completely different cards to those you currently have, even if you have chip cards. Everyone will need to be issued with a new style card (even though it'll probably look the same) before you can use it as chip and pin. Current cards aren't set up for that system.

You can still use UK credit cards but have to sign, hence they're no good in unmanned stations.

I may be wrong on this, as I've never been to Sweden to try it, but my experiences in France bear this out, well, they did last year (nearly ran out of bloody fuel on the Autoroute!).

I had an early start one Sunday towards the North of Sweden and I nearly ran dry before I found one open. I did`nt see many unmaned stations up the Northern bit.

Almost all petrol stations in Sweden has one pump were you can use cash, 20 kronor or 100 kronor bills.
You just put the bills in the machine next to the pump and you can fill your tank any hour.
