492 drivers were caught without a Swiss vignette recently, near Basel.
Big fine and compulsory purchase of a vignette on the spot.
They cost 40 Swiss Francs I believe.

Probably hanging around the motorway exits around Palexpo, The salon de l’automobile was held there from March 5th to 8th

Swiss plod are usually all over the place robbing foreigners, it’s very easy to get on to the motorway by mistake so it’s a good earner

When i was there last 2022 we were stopped at the border and had to purchase the vignette before they would let us proceed, has this changed and you have to purchase in advance now?

They are not always present at the borders.
You can also buy the vignette digitally (I did this summer) that is a bit quicker as a process and there is not the "issue" of the sticker on the bike.

Years ago I used to travel through Switzerland regularly. Always got my vignette sticker at the border, etc.
One year I got to destination and realised that I completely forgot to stop and buy the new sticker. But thankfully no one checked/stopped me at that time (gets expensive fairly quickly). Got it for the way back of course.

Few years ago we were touring and a couple of days crisscrossing the border between Switzerland and it's neighbours, never once checked our passports just the Vignettes

Don't really understand what the issue is. Go to Switzerland, get a Vignette. If you don't want to buy a Vignette, don't go to Switzerland. Simple.
Take a risk with no Vignette on Swissy roads then pay the consequences. There are no grey areas I Swiss regulations.

I rode through Switzerland last summer, pretty much from eastern border with Italy to western border with France. I was also concerned about needing a vignette, but some local fellas explained that it was necessary for motorways only. Stuck to non motorway roads for the whole time. Simples.

very easy to avoid motorway toll roads in the south as there aren't many compared to the north. Getting past somewhere like Lucerne without using toll roads is time consuming.

toll roads are very easy to spot on google maps, although counter intuitive to Brits as they are marked with red numerals. Blue numbers are like our A roads.

I’m planning to drive the Grand Tour of Switzerland in June. I say planning, the current world situation may put paid to it, but a Swiss vignette is part of the budget planning. You never know when you may need a motorway escape/return route.

Interestingly, Swiss vignette hasn’t increased in price over the past 20 years…
It was and still is SF 40.-
Not a bad deal at all compared with some other places

Our group trip in May includes Switzerland.

I think I will buy a digital vignette in advance, at forty Swiss francs a year its hardly going to cripple me compared to the fines if caught without one.

There is a few bit in southern Switzerland where actively avoiding the motorway would add significant time to some short-ish journeys.
It's 38 quid. Not a million, but your choice.
