Swiss vignette warning

Our group trip in May includes Switzerland.

I think I will buy a digital vignette in advance, at forty Swiss francs a year its hardly going to cripple me compared to the fines if caught without one.

That's a good shout. Does it link to your reg and the coppers in CH just check that then? Probably a good idea to carry a print out for proof of payment in case you get stopped?

My mother in law is Swiss so I am used to their "very-to-the-point" :D

I've got better things to do on my week off than stand at a Swiss roadside like a naughty schoolboy in front of two Swiss coppers with a mobile bank card reader.

I hve to admit I do not have a particular fondness (I might be paraphrasing) for the Swiss, but I found the British way more anal retentive (and with a jobsworth attitude) towards speed limits if I have to be honest :D

Way more speed cameras too :D :D :D

There is a few bit in southern Switzerland where actively avoiding the motorway would add significant time to some short-ish journeys.
It's 38 quid. Not a million, but your choice. :)
Most people here would be in the category of taking the scenic route, rather than some economic migrants fleeing the tyranny of the EU ASAP. Just saying ...

When i was there last 2022 we were stopped at the border and had to purchase the vignette before they would let us proceed, has this changed and you have to purchase in advance now?
I've done that in the past but there was nobody there last September. The services at Pratteln sell them, the first shop through the door next to the Autogrill.

I remember about 10-12 years ago we were on the eastern side of Switzerland (Davos springs to mind) in the mountains and it was biblical with rain
Normally we didn’t use motorways there and therefore didn’t buy a Vignette ever
We’d stopped for fuel and a coffee and debated just fucking off on the motorway to Zurich and Basel and into France because of the rain
4 of us and we deliberated buying a vignette and so decided to toss a coin (as there a consensus of not bothering)
Heads we bought one, somewhat reluctantly
However because the screens were wet through and dirty we put the vignette into our wallets and set off
Exiting at Basel the police were waiting on the slip road and seeing no vignettes on 4 bikes, were salivating at the thought of big fines
We were stopped
We got our wallets out and showed the vignettes
We were let off and on our way, although failure to display is an offence - but we pointed at the rain
Lesson learned that you don’t fuck with the Swiss police 👮
