Swiss vignette

It's not based on time as in you can enter the country on an A road without the need for one. I did this and avoided motorway but it took feckin ages to ride from Basel to Zurich. Place one millimeter of rubber on a Swiss motorway and you need one. It has nothing to do with EU. You can be black, white, EU, African, a penguin, doesn't matter. Use the Swiss Autobahn you need one.

Thanks for clearing that up. I avoid motorways whenever possible while touring on a bike and so was in the clear ... except around the border at Geneva ...

These vignette jockies are currently pissing me off - every time I arrive at the France/Basel frontier (which is frequently just at the moment) I get shunted into the queue for a vignette (UK plates), even though I explain every time I'm just going to Basel.

Then I get asked impertinent questions about my destination by someone in a uniform and a hat. I asked them today if they have the right to demand my destination - all or a sudden they didn't speak English, or Hochdeutsch, or French.

Bloody jobsworths nearly made me late for my appointment today.

the fancy tent one? I have noticed they seem to be cocks on that border compared to the larger DE/CH one.

was it the vignette seller or border control asking the question?

a mate has a bit to do with the border patrol and strictly speaking if its the tent border you are entering on the highway, even though the basel exit is about 100metres away.. they would have to real arseholes to force you to buy one, if thats the case turn back to france and go thru the st.louis border....

Yes, the one that looks like a circus. The border patrol directed me to the (long summer) queue for the ticket sellers (very official-looking uniforms they have) despite me saying i was only going to Allschwil and the ticket seller asking the impertinant questions.

If you look on Google maps sat view, the exit lane for the city starts at exactly the point where the toll pay lane finishes - don't suppose the argument would wash with police though. In fact on the way back you have to go on more autoroute than going in.

Might have to start using some of the unofficial crossings:augie

I'm going to get one and leave it on display under the clear plastic on my tank bag, then I can sell it once I get home!:augie

It seems like these second hand un-used vignettes are like gold-dust.

I've been posting in the wanted section for 4 weeks looking one......

Between yesterday and today I have had 2 ebay sellers agree to sell me one at at an over-inflated price, then change their mind and let the auction run. Think I will just bite the bullet and pay full price. I bet the authorities don't even look at it when I head over there.........

I don't think you'll need one where you're going Betty. You aren't likely to be on any Swiss motorways. I didn't need one when I was there:comfort

Yeah Dave, been through Switzerland several times on a trip a few years ago, made a point of avoiding the motorways. However, the guys organising the trip this time have already got them and are probably going to make a point of using them!

I'm not organising the runs each day, so will just have to go with the flow.

There's a good reason for that - if they are not permanently fixed to the vehicle then they're not valid and the offence is the same as not having one. Its not impossible to get them off when they are correctly fixed, but its not easy.

So if, as some suggest, you just put it in the tank bag cover, then, really you're wasting your money.

Just came through Basel today. Bought a vignette at the border, luckily, was asked for one by polezei who made me move my bike to a m/c bay.
I'd say from talking to peopel taht the chances of being inspected are high.
Cheers

I can see how you might think that, but I've driven thousands of miles in Switzerland (both with and without vignettes) and never been asked.

Only ghassle I have is in my currently twice weekly transit at Basel.

Just got back from the land of Heidi and moutain passes.

If you buy a Vignette on line its 28 euros + p&P (google it)

If you buy on at the Basel services its 35 euros (i did this one)

If you buy one at the Border its 40 euros

There were border guards checking bikes & cars

A couple of bikers i was talking to were finned 100 chf and made to buy a Vignette

Pays your money takes your chances ;)
